Variety confirmed today Mickey Rourke has finally officially signed onto Iron Man 2. This is where it gets kind of odd. They report he'll play:

"Whiplash, a character that includes elements from that comicbook villain and Crimson Dynamo, another Russian baddie."

Someone might feel me in, how they might possibly plan to mix two villains into one? Also, E! Online confirmed through her rep, that Scarlett Johansson officially signed onto the sequel to play Black Widow. Meh. Win some, lose some. Can't wait.

Whiplash was a promising student, and fulltime employee of Stark Industries. embittered with Starks success, he crafted for himself some technological duds (not like the iron man suit at all), including an electric whip. He battles Stark many times, and is owned every time. He later becomes an assassin. After years of being an assassin, he repents after he gets a family. After his family dies (killed by another assassin), he becomes an assassin again. He is hired to kill Stark shortly after Stark returned from an alternate dimension where Iron Man battled Onslaught. Stark, losing control of his suit (the suit being so advanced, that it became sentient, remembered battling Whiplash years earlier) killed Whiplash. It made Stark question his morality, and guilt tripped him heavily...it still does.

There have been several Crimson Dynamos, assuming however that they are speaking of the original, Anton Vanko, was a Russian scientist of Armenian descent. He was the worlds foremost expert on electricity. He defected from the USSR, after being tricked in a battle with Iron Man, to think that his Russian Handlers would betray him, he moved to America and ended up working for Tony Stark. The Russians, upset at his defection would send two assassins to kill him, Black Widow and Boris Turgeniv. (Turgeniv would be the next dynamo after stealing Vanko's suit) Anton dies saving Tony Stark when he fires an experimental laser gun that kills him.


So i imagine it will be along these lines:

he will be a Russian prodigy that turns against his government (likely stealing military tech), and master of electricity that wields an iron suit, along side the electric whip. He'll become embittered with Stark, become Whiplash, and attempt to kill him. All while Black Widow attempts to infiltrate Stark Industries, so that she may discover the Russian traitor, and possibly steal some Stark tech. Stark and Whiplash will go round for round, at which point Whiplash will learn the meaning of heroism (by viewing the selfless acts of Stark), and likely end up losing his own life to the Black Widow while simultaneously saving Stark and hundreds of Stark Industries employees (Stark Employees, or his own family it's going to be one or the other.).

Over all, i'd say it's a pretty promising villain.

What i think it will be, heh. Can you say it's not a pretty good shot at it?

Well, since they infer that it will be a mix of the characters, i'd imagine he would have the aspects of both characters, that the audience can relate to . He's obviously going to be a more tragic villain (As both Whiplash, and the original Crimson Dynamo were tragic), because we already had the simply villainous profiteer. We don't want another one. He's going to be a villain, that our hearts go out to. Pretty much has to be, for it to be any different than the last movie. He's going to plot against Stark, from the inside of his corporation, probably trying to steal tech for some noble cause like the liberation of Armenian nationals in the USSR or to save his family. Something of the like.

I'm hoping Favreau and company pull out something good with the combination of Whiplash and Dynamo, but to be honest I'd rather see them as individual characters. Combo characters can work out okay and also not as much... the Hulk films showed us this. Roth's Blonsky was basically a combination of the source material's Blonsky combined with Talbot. While Nolte's elder Banner was part mad scientist combined with Banner's father with the Absorbing Man thrown into the mix. If it makes for a good story that's all well and good, but why fool with combining villains if we're getting the Rhodey and War Machine hoopla?

When you get down to it, Shellhead's foes pretty much fall into three categories guys with gimmicks (be it weapon tech like Whiplash or suit like Crimson Dynamo), "sinister" corporate types like Justin Hammer, Obadiah Stane, and Edwin Cord, with the third grouping being the out of this world type stuff with Ultimo and Fin Fang Foom. Personally, I'd love to see the whole Cord/Firepower/Armor Wars deal for a third film, and shoot for the moon with either the giant robot or the dragon for a fourth.


As for Sam Jackson being back... while it was cool as hell seeing that scene in the theater, it's lost it's luster a fair bit for me with subsequent viewings of the DVD. This hardcore Fury fan wants to see the Howler DO something... film series of his own perhaps?... and I think I'd rather see Kurt Russell as Fury anyhow.

And i agree, Russel as Fury would be amazing. Escape From New York, for the win.
