There Will Be Blood - Page 3

This isn't a horror movie, and there's no other movie like it. Go by yourself to see this damn movie, it's that good.

It's about to win Best Picture here in about three hours. I would highly suggest tuning in. If Juno wins I'm going to throw shit at my TV.

It definitely won't be winning Best Picture, but it was a phenomenal film. I would, however, bet my life that Daniel Day Lewis wins Best Actor.

No Country is for sure going to win in the Best Picture category.

Saw the film earlier today by the way. I'll give a review later. Simply put, I think it's probably the best film of 2007. It's just a little ahead of No Country.

Dan_bug, you might wanna try The Assassination of Jesse James...; it reminded me of this in pace, scope, and style. Of course, Blood is truly one-of-a-kind. But then again, Assassination is too.

I can see a few fellow Assassination fans in here; props Blinko.

All in all, we really did have a good movie season, come to think of it...No Country, Assassination, Blood, and Bruges really made up for the suck-festage, vis-a-vis Jumper, AVP:R, et al...

They're two seperate people. Paul Dano was only supposed to read the part of Paul, but Anderson liked him so much he fired the guy that was going to play Eli and let Dano play both parts. They're supposed to be two people.

I think it's pretty obvious both at the dinner scene when Eli tells his father that Paul brought Plainview there and also at the end when Plainview tells Eli that Paul was the smart one and put $10,000 in his hand for leading him to Little Boston.

I can see how some people could get confused, though. It's never plainly stated that they're twins.

Would you be more specific with the question? Are you asking if I believe Daniel Plainview was justified in what he did to procure his wealth? I haven't read Oil! yet but intend on doing so (from what I've read, the film is very, VERY loosely based upon the novel anyway) but I have read some Upton Sinclair and feel I have a grasp on his basic ideology. All of that in mind, I think you have to look at Eli as just as big of a villain in this film as Daniel. Granted, he hasn't killed anyone or abandoned a blood relative, but he's arguably done something worse--he's taken the one thing that even the poor people of the world have to take comfort in (the word of God) and bastardized it for his own personal gain. SPOILER:Does he deserve to die in the end? That's up for interpretation, but I don't think you can say Plainview is the only evil character in the film.

I think There Will Be Blood shows the evils inherent in all human beings that can be drawn out by capitalism, but because it's a character study, we can only assume that this individual the film is based upon is meant to be an extraordinary case.
