Great Deku Tree

The Great Deku Tree is not only an important character in Ocarina of Time as a guardian of the Kokiri, but also the first dungeon Link explores on his adventure. Before that, however, it is the Great Deku Tree who talks to Navi and tells her to go find Link and bring him back to him.

Cursed by Ganondorf who wanted the Kokiri's Emerald, the Great Deku Tree asks if Link will help rid him of his curse. This angers Mido, who believes it should be him and can't understand why Link would be the one asked to help. Although Link manages to defeat Queen Gohma, it is too late to save the ancient tree. Before he dies, however, he tells Link of the history of Hyrule and the creation of the Triforce. He then sets Link on his path to becoming a hero and passes on.

So what does everyone think of the Great Deku Tree. Is it interesting he is both a character and a dungeon? Did you feel sorry for him being cursed, and how did you feel when you found out you couldn't save him? Did you enjoy his explanations? How much influence do you think he had in the lives of the Kokiri?

It's pretty disappointing to go through the effort of your first dungeon to find out he dies anyway. I suppose it helps to spur the quest though, and he is replaced by the Great Deku Sprout whose springing out of the ground that shocks Link always being amusing.

To touch upon his influence in the life of the Kokiri, it's interesting we only see them outside of Kokiri Forest during the end credits.

That's true, although if there are things like Stalfos running around I'd still be scared about what could be in the forest even after Link's actions. Then again I guess the Great Deku Sprout must be able to do the same sort of things as the Great Deku Tree.

I found it to be one of the more emotional parts of the game. Also quite dark given how early in the title it is.

Just a shame we don't see the Great Deku Sprout grow and become another dungeon! I suppose if it was Minish Cap it'd be another story though.

And on that note, I rather liked the dungeon Inside the Deku Tree. It works pretty well as the first and therefore introductory dungeon of the game. ^^
