I don't know about you guys, but it seems like game reviews really need to break out of this habit of writing about how bad the game is and then giving in an above-average score.

Big A2 Neo uses a 7 average review scale, like a lot of establishments these days. Personally, I prefer the 5 average scale too, as it not only lets me clearly state whether a game is bad or not, but also provides more room to describe how good a game is.

bbb7002004 I'm the same as you, in that I don't typically read a review in order to decide what games I want to play, but I still like to read them. There's a lot of insight into what makes a game, simply stated, good or bad. It helps maintain perspective, otherwise it's easy to fall into dismissing games without giving them a fair chance.

For instance, there are certain outlets that have absolutely loved Code of Princess. It's really interesting to me how they enjoyed it, and by reading their descriptions I can see where they glossed over the parts that really stuck with me -- or vice versa.

Scores are pretty ridiculous though, right? haha

Game reviews should just stop giving scores period. A game can't be factored down to a single number, if you want to know the reviewer's opinion, read the review.

That said, I don't pay attention to reviews anymore. I have a good grasp of what I like and don't like and can usually tell whether I'll like the game or not via trailers.

I think number scores are for the lazy people they're trying to wrangle in. People who depend on publicity or favortism have to resort to pandering and doing things that have become "the norm", despite being contrary to the goal of the review. An ugly byproduct of popularity.
