How can I convince my parents to let me buy a 3DS?

First of all, do not start telling them you're an adult or you're grown up. Usually kids who have to beg their parents to spend their own money are not mature enough to emphasise this point properly. Simply go by the statement "I need to start making my own purchasing decisions."
Let them know that it is your money, unless it is pocket money given by your parents. If it is then don't bother. You should have earned this through a job first! Them giving you pocket money is to ensure that you're not always begging them to buy you every single thing you see and want. It's a start to proper money saving and proper spending and doesn't include big purchases. They want you to have some merit in your spending. Sorry to throw this out there again but on pocket money, you have much less say in what you buy.

Purchasing this 3DS shows them that you want to make an educated decision on how you spend your own money. What helps is showing them the prices, what you intend to purchase, where you will get it and what kind of savings you will make. You need to show them that whilst you're spending a lot of this money, you're not making a spontaneous decision and that you can make budgeted decisions. Let them know that buying the 3DS won't be a wasted purchase and that it will not have a negative effect on your studies.

You don't want to have to get them to monitor your gaming time, because let's face it, that makes it impossible to enjoy and wastes your parents time as well. Tell them that you will play in moderation and not abandon your chores, study or extra curricular commitments and that if anything should happen such as a drop in grades, you will take responsibility for it and make the changes, be it banning yourself from playing the console or selling it (if it is an extremely severe case).

To finish up, hopefully your parents are kind enough to give you some choice, though in my honest opinion you lose points for posting about getting a 3DS in a PS Vita forum...
