Do they work the same way? because I need 1 of the two and I'm thinking they're the same thing....so can anyone tell me the difference if there is one?

Depends on what you need it for. The switch will connect your network together, however if you need to share an internet access from your ISP, then you'll need to go with the router. A router is a switch with the ability to share your internet access.
