Keeping something locked down and inaccessible is not a good long term strategy. Apple is doing it but they provide extensive development options for their devices which seems to be raising profits, keeping hacking to a minimum and providing their users with tons of apps. Sony is going the other way and instead of adding features, they are removing them and adding more forced paid services, which is probably why their posting record losses and firing tens of thousands of employees. It seems that a lot of Japanese software/hardware companies are unable to adapt and provide quality products and support outside of Japan.

Well, I'll reply to Vaskov and Crimson above, but this is taking a decidedly off topic turn, so I won't follow up this post.

Vaskov, Apple keeps hacking to a minimum? really? That'll explain why the next iPhone will have been jailbroken before it even retails, just like the last one was. Every apple owner I know has their device(s) jailbroken, and even use that as a selling point.

Sony's financial woes have absolutely zero to do with anything you said. The gaming division is profitable. The biggest two issues for Sony are HDTVs and tax credits. The losses that they have experienced are actually entirely due to the problems they are experiencing in the HDTV business where competition from manufacturers who's build costs are a fraction of Sony's are eating them alive in the mass market. Even Samsung is feeling that pinch, their equivalent HDTV business lost a ton of money last fiscal year also. The losses in the TV business offset the profitability of the rest of Sony, and resulted in them not being able to take advantage of some tax credits that were based on their level of profitability, as a result they also paid more tax than anticipated. That additional tax was reflected as a loss on the balance sheet. The net result was a huge loss that looks horrible in the headlines ad has been great copy to people that want to castigate Sony's gaming division - except of course, the gaming division made money. You might want to refrain from making snap judgements about what Japanese businesses are doing if you are going to make assumptions about their financial position.

Omegastrider. The vita is cheaper than the iPhone because at $250 without a contract you have all the functionality minus 3G. Buy an iPhone without a 2 year contract and tell me which is cheaper. I understand the point thought htat at the point of sale an iPhone with a contract is cheaper than a Vita with a data contract. Though the Vita data contract is less expensive than the phone one as well...it's all about how you look at it. I own a Vita, and it's an amazing piece of hardware. The screen is gorgeous and it plays many of my PSP JRPGs which look great on that big screen.

I think that Sony's biggest issue is the perception of Sony among tech and gamer groups. For some reason there is a very negative perception of Sony in general. The negativity or even hatred can be very passionate, and yet at the same time is often completely baseless. Quite why people find it so easy to be negative is beyond me. However that negativity hurt Sony with PS3, PSP and now Vita. If you look at their products objectively, they are great products, but people are not objective. From this gamer's point of view, a smartphone is not a good gaming device. they have no controls, and are restricted in terms of their size. not only that but if I burn the battery playing a game, my phone dies. Therefore I find Vita (and PSP) to be excellent companions to my phone. Not only that but there is a plethora of JRPGs on PSP, many of which run on Vita, and more coming for Vita. So for JRPG fans, Vita is very easy to justify.

Biggaberta I don't agree with you there Xbox360 got some amazing rpg, back when it all started i had to buy both mainly because the word was ff was going to be exclusive to ps3 but as we all know this isn't true, xbox got some great rpg of their own

for me the best console for rpg is xbox as everything ps3 got xbox has it as well and more titles too plus they usually get it before ps3
even metalgear solid is on xbox360

So, is the title of the article supposed to be the counter point or the actual data? Take a look at the actual figures and the make up of the Sony group that they are talking about in that article. You will find that the loss making HDTV division is in the same group as the gaming business. PlayStation gaming is profitable for Sony, HDTVs are not.
