It appears my preconceived notions about The Bureau: XCOM Declassified may have been shortsighted. Having played the game as early as 2010 it seemed like a unique shooter at the time, but with the release of latest gameplay trailer "Call the Shots" it's starting to become clear what the delays were for. The Bureau: XCOM Declassified has taken a ton of inspiration from XCOM: Enemy Unknown!
Okay, yes, it's still third-person and all real time. It looks like players can play the game entirely as a simple shooter with no regard for more complex strategies. However, as seen in the trailer, it can also be played extremely tactically. The player doesn't fire a shot the whole time. He orders his squad around, makes them use their abilities and focuses their attention on specific targets. If it was top down and turnbased it'd be Enemy Unknown. Even the environment looks similar!
The Bureau: XCOM Declassified's "Call the Shots" trailer has made me a believer. Releasing August 20 on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, I hope 2K shows off more of this tactical action in the future. It's probably more akin to Mass Effect 3's squad-based combat, but the XCOM: Enemy Unknown influence is undeniable.
