The end of March brought some interesting news, when several domains were registered by Take-Two for a game called The Bureau. This led to speculation that perhaps the XCOM FPS was being rebranded, but nothing was certain at the time. Now, however, there's more fuel to the fire as the website and videos for the XCOM FPS are no longer online.
If you try to navigate to the website, you're greeted with a 404 error. Likewise all the videos and trailers on YouTube are now set to private on the official 2K page. So what gives? Well, it could be just a massive snafu on 2K Marin's part, except for those domains for that Bureau game. One of them is for a whathappenedin62.com, with that year, 1962, being the same as when the XCOM FPS was originally slated to be set. That game was going to be an origins tale of how XCOM came to be, yet maybe it's going to carry a completely different name.
The XCOM FPS had been in the works for a long time, but multiple delays and a possible reworking from first to third-person has left the public in the dark. In fact, the last time the game was seen publicly was during E3 2011, which is something to be concerned about.
Last year's XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a tradtional strategy reimagining of the series, turned out to be incredibly successful for Firaxis and Take-Two. It's entirely possible the publisher wants to keep the strategy and shooter parts separate now, hence The Bureau. Whatever the case may be, something definitive one way or the other has to come from 2K and Take-Two.
