The Suffering of a Pokemon

"Pokemon never wanted this to happen.

They had lived their lives, at least partially, in the comfort of the places they called home. But for some of them, a day came where their lives changed to complete misery.

Imagine you were happy, chirping away, a bird Pokemon careless as can be. Then suddenly... Pain!

Pain as you were hit from behind by the scorching fire based move as it burned your feathers... or the pain of nature and grass itself as it cut into you... or the pain of your lungs burning as you were subjected to copious amounts of water after being slammed from your perch by the cold liquid.

You look across, and see the starter Pokemon that those cruel humans stored in their colourless labratories. You could see their eyes, they identified with you, but they could not disobey the rude child's orders. Again and again they had to put you in this agony, until you were too weak to flee, to escape and tend to your wounds and hide.

The last you could see that day was a small sphere-like object.

From there on, your life took a turn for the worse. You did the very same to the other defenseless Pokemon you came across, hurting them for the emotionless human who you were forced to call 'Master' or 'Mistress' once they had locked you away. Locked you away in a cramped, dark and cold ball-like object where you tried to tend to your wounds and found yourself unable to, and where you cried yourself to sleep.

You had to watch them go through the same torture as you, but you weren't allowed to say sorry, that you really had no choice, and the crushing guilt you felt when they had disappeared away into the 'Pokey ball', or whatever the evil device was. Sometimes you left them there to die, returning to the darkness that the ball provided, faintly making out the footsteps of the tyrant who imprisoned you, and you knew you were walking away, leaving that poor thing with as many cuts and grazes and injuries that you were ordered to do from the actions you had learnt.

It was a double-edged sword, getting stronger was, because you knew that getting stronger might enable you to escape from them. Escape from the soulless human when they let their guard down a little. But there was also the knowledge that these stronger techniques will hurt those other Pokemon more, that they might even kill them, and you never wanted to murder anyone.

Even a trip to heal your wounds, that you got from the opposition's self-defense, whether in the wild or in the cruel bloodsport that fighting another 'trainer' would result in, was a hollow luxury. You knew that the nice lady was going to fix you and make your pain go away, but her eyes never spoke out to you, that she had any sympathy or heart for a creature of your sort.

Then there was that flashy place that your trainer took you to, the place where you knew that they'd dump you to, and have another one take you away.

You hoped the other person would be nicer, and release you to live your life back where you knew as home, but it never was. Only rarely did that happen, and you heard that Pokemon that did were shunned for a different appearance, or that it left them a risk to the Pokemon they were raised around and had to leave in exile.

You heard whispers of 'legendary Pokemon', one of a kind, and you hated them. You hated those Pokemon for being so uncommon, rare, hardly found unlike you, but you also pitied them for being driven close to extinction that only a few remained. You also hated them for the strength they possessed, to protect them from the nasty people who travelled to find them.

But the most of all, you hated the fact that you were so weak, that you could be replaced by a stronger Pokemon so easily and denied the luxury of sunlight, when you are outside of the small ball, that hurt more when you had a bigger form.

And here you are now, thinking this, in the eternal darkness of the 'Pee see', hearing the quiet sobs of all the Pokemon around you, some that you contributed towards, and you know they recieved the same verdict as you did. Guilty, weak, worthless, jailed."

I for one don't understand why buying a Magikarp for 500 has always been depicted as a "bad deal", ever since Red. In LeafGreen, I'd buy the Magikarp so that I could train it earlier than I would be able to if I caught one with the Old Rod in Vermilion City. Now in Black and White, it's the same price, but it's a pokemon that can only be obtained through the Pokeshifter, and can't be found anywhere else in Unova. I mean, if it was a good idea (IMO) in Kanto, then it's a genius idea here in Unova. There's no reason to complain about it; 500 is almost nothing.

And also, what I think the 'bad deal' comes from is the fact that it was something that players had no control over and was easier to do themselves.

But here in Isshu/Unova, I think it's a good deal, unless of course you can capture Magikarps after the E4.
