First off, I'd like to say that I've never played FEAR or FEAR 2, this is my first FEAR ever, yet I know of the story. I shall categorize this for you so you can get to the meat of you concerns.
In FEAR 3, there is a Ranking System. As you complete challenges in Campaign, kill enemies, do multiplayer games, etc. you will earn Score which is the equivalent of Exp in most games. There are a total of 21 levels, and there is unfortunately NO prestige mode. Each level you unlock something, whether it's a combo move, additional health / energy regeneration rates, overall speed, etc. To give you an idea of how long it takes to get from level 1-21, it takes somewhere around 1,200,000 score / exp. I first got this game on Saturday night, and I've been playing it A LOT since then ( it's now Tuesday morning ), I'm already half way through 20, real close to 21. I find that this ranking system is a nice addition to the game, but it doesn't prove skill or really show how long you've played as it can take someone a mere 2-3 days of playing A LOT to get to the max level.
The Campaign is short. There are only 8 intervals, and most of them are no longer than 45 minutes. I'd say that this is about a 5 or 6 hour campaign if you play on Commando ( Normal mode ), 4 hours if you play on Recruit. Now, there definitely is replay value, after you complete an Interval, you unlock the ability to play as Fettel for said mission and he's actually a ton of fun to play as, he dominates literally everything. As you can imagine, possessing enemies, using telekinesis, shooting out red blasts, shielding your team mate ( Point Man ), and the like is a ton of fun. Also if you want to get the highest score for the Campaign Leaderboard you're actually forced to play as Fettel so you'll get not only your best scores from Point Man, but also Fettel and it adds up. Another thing that falls into the whole replay value thing of the campaign is achievements. Let me first go over the difficulties of FEAR 3: There's Recruit, Commando, Fearless, and then once you've completed the whole campaign at least once, you unlock Insane. There's achievements for completing the whole campaign on Insane, and there's achievements for getting a certain score on certain Intervals ( secret achievements ). On top of those achievements, there's also collectible Alma dolls, one per Interval and they can be difficult to find. The campaign is meant to be played cooperatively, I won't spoil much but I'll say that there's two endings and the ending that gets chosen is based on whether Point Man does better overall or if Fettel does better overall ( If you're just playing by your self as either character, that ending will come ).
The Horror Aspect
If you're looking for a game that will scare the poop out of you, I'm sorry but this game does not fill those needs. If you need a scary game go play Amnesia: Dark Descent or something. For the first 4 or so Intervals I was actually kind of scared! Alma popped up at random times and would scream and the environments for the most part were kind of creepy to say the least. Now, I found myself desensitized from being scared after around Interval 5. When ever I saw Alma, it didn't really scare me anymore. In fact, there was one time ( I won't spoil it for you all ) where she came up at the Port and it was so ridiculously placed that I just couldn't help but laugh.
The Multiplayer is honestly the highlight of the game. There are four game modes, and I will list them out for you:
*NOTE* Each of these Game Modes have three maps to play on and there can be up to 4 players total.
1) *bleep*ing Run - You basically have to run away from the wall of death ( smoke ) that is moving from behind you and chasing you. If any of your team mates touch it, it's game over ( Griefing, anybody? ). Whilst running, you have to fight off the usual enemies like The Dogs, Freaks, Armacham Soldiers, and such. It can be pretty hard, I tend to play this game mode on Recruit and I still haven't been able to complete it yet.
2) Contractions - Okay think of Nazi Zombies from good old Call of Duty: WaW + Black Ops. Now imagine different types of enemies instead of just the zombies ( soldiers, dogs, freaks, even phase casters and phase commanders ), the points system is purely cosmetic it has nothing to do with weapons, there is a Cap of 20 waves ( Really hard, even on Recruit! ), realistic barricading ( you actually have a hammer and nail it down, but you can only barricade AFTER a wave is over, not during a wave, and you only have so much time to do this ), and you find supply crates after each wave and take them to a weapon spot. Now there are multiple weapon spots on each map, for example on Mechanized Invasion ( my favorite map because you can control a Mech ), not only does the starting building have several weapon spots for you to drop off the crates, but there's also a Church that you can drop the crates off at. There's two types of crates, yellow and red. There can only be one red crate at a time and they give the best weaponry. Also in this game mode you have little Alma randomly popping up and walking around, if you look at her for to long, run into her, or accidentally shoot her she will do something to you. What she does to you is random, she will either Teleport you + Blind you, Slow you down + Blind you, or just Hurt you and take some of your ammo. Sometimes she'll just mix and match some of the above actions.
3) Soul Survivor - In this game mode one of the four players is randomly selected by Alma to be the Specter. The Specter's goal is to consume the soul of each of the enemies. There's a ton of Armacham Soldiers and Freaks running around and your best bet is to possess them and put the other players into last stand and then take their soul. Unfortunately, if you're not the Specter and you are down, not only can your team mates revive you, but you can revive yourself by making a kill. This game mode can easily be used to boost, and I personally find it dull. Each round a different Specter is chosen by Alma ( Unless there are more rounds than players, you will not be a Specter more than once ).
4) Soul King - So basically every player is a Specter. Throughout the map there are a ton of Freaks + Armacham Soldiers. The goal here is to possess one and kill everyone else and collect the souls. If you die, you lose half your souls. If you currently have the most souls then you will be marked as the Soul King and every other player will be able to see you easily because you will be highlighted ( Like in Left 4 Dead ). Again this could be used for Boosting.
I've been playing the multiplayer for a while now and I've found it very fun and different from your generic FPS. Unfortunately, it CAN be troublesome to find a game at times, especially a game with all microphone users, I got lucky last night on Contractions!
