Hey ppl, I just joined this comunity and am still kinda nooby. I have Heart Gold and Im just wondering if anyone could explain to me a little about those shinys every1s talking about. I mean I checked on bulbapedia but I didnt quite get it. How I get them ? How I know if my pokemon is shiny or not ? Can you breed them ? Those sort of things...
Hi! I am also new and have been working to understand all the different aspects of shiny. I will share with you what I have learned so far.
A shiny has something like a 1/8000 chance of approaching you in the wild, as you walk through tall grass, caves, etc. Now, it could be a smaller chance, but it is certainly not higher. It is a super small chance. In all my years of playing and breeding pokemon I have only ever found one "organically" that is, just wandering about on my own.
That being said at the start of today I had about 12. I have since traded some away. Everyone I currently have on my PokemonBlack game was acquired over GTS trade. I have probably done 200+ GTS trades, almost all in exchange for legendaries I recycled.
From reading a forum post about hacks and scams I learned that many shinies are actually hacked and are therefore undesirable and potentially dangerous to players games. I recommend reading that post as it is very informative. That being said, I still do not have much confidence on determining this factor on my own.
Also, I have learned "UT" or untouched pokemon are more desirable ... this meants un-touched or un-trained. It means your pokemon has never received any experience points. Basically they are a clean slate.This way people who get the shinies from you will be able to easily calculate EVs or earned values, basically the stat gaines pokemon gain each time they level.\ to defense, attack, etc.
"Flawless" is also very desirable to prospective traders. This means the shiny has the maximum stats available at the given level, if I understand correctly, which I try my best to.
The final bit of information I have to offer is that, it seems Trainers prefer pokemon with english names to asian names. So if you do get a shiny from GTS be aware that an asian named pokemon is less desirable.

Wow, thx for the info. I had no clue what UT was untill you explained it. I kinda got it what shinies are, still Im not sure how to recognize one, does it say in name or it has a mark or sth. Anyhow you helped me a lot. Thx again.
Shiny pokemon are extremely rare. That is why people want them. You can get them from trades or from the wild. To tell if it's shiny 1) on the summary of the pokemon will be a red star next to the picture of the pokemon 2) when entering a battle there will be a ring of stars that will appear around the pokemon for a brief second 3) it will be a different color, some whole body ( like dragonite) and some on just little parts ( like gastly/haunter's mouth)
Hey no problem, it is tough coming into a very informed community that uses abbreviations you are not familiar with ... I know all too well. Cdawg is dead on, i mean to mention that .. if you go to the summary on the row where you can designate a symbol for the pokemon there will be a red star like he said. Sometimes, depending on the pokemon, it can be hard to distinguish the color change. My shiny turtwig for example, is so close to the original color in my opinion that I have to refer to that red star to distinguish.
