re: The New Season: 2007 - 2008

The only shows I watch on NBC are The Office and Scrubs, so it's great to see their both back and that Scrubs will finish off its run on the NBC Thursday night. They also did what I thought they would so, put 30 Rock in between Earl and Office, which I like because now the Office/Scrubs combo is back.

re: The New Season: 2007 - 2008

I'm not exactly thrilled about the move of Friday Night Lights to the new timeslot, it's almost worse in some ways than the Tuesday slot. There's a bit of funny irony about it-a show about football on Friday nights moves to Friday nights when, in the fall anyway, there's a lot of football under the lights. Friday Night Lights after Friday Night Lights. Nice to see an extension for My Name Is Earl too, I really like that show.

I've also made the first additions to the Cancelled/Renewed Shows list above as ABC handed out 4 pink slips early this morning ahead of their upfront presentation (these shows are in addition to the list in the first post). For those who have heard about "Extreme Makeover" getting one, it's only for the original cosmetic/plastic surgery version, not the Home Edition (that one will keep going).

Edit: Since it's upfront week and there's so much else happening, both on and off TV, I'm taking a break from doing the weekly ratings reports for a few weeks. They'll return in June.

re: The New Season: 2007 - 2008

ABC just announced a schedule change for the end of the May Sweeps-the "Boston Legal" season finale, originally set for Tuesday night, has been moved back to May 29 at 10 PM. ABC will now instead air "The Bachelor: After The Final Rose" this Tuesday (5/22) at 8, then the 2 hour "Dancing With The Stars" finale at 9.

Edit: Quick note on the "24" renewal noted in the first post-it's for 2 more seasons, so it'll stay on the air until at least through the 2008-09 season. Kiefer Sutherland will return for both seasons.

I'm also excited for The Office/Scrubs hour combo in the fall. These are the two highest quality comedies on television right now and should complement each other well. Of course, I would have had no problem turning to ABC for my Scrubs fix, but I'm glad the network didn't give up on it for a full seven years.

I don't watch Scrubs. I watch the "My Name is Earl" and "The Office" combo. Great stuff.

Wow, I can believe "Jericho" got cancelled. I thought it was doing good. Man, I really did like that show.

I heard Drive was a good show. Can't believe it got cancelled.

Everything I watch, Medium, Scrubs, 30 Rock, and SVU are all back. So I'm happy. Scrubs will leave us.

And Grey's Anatomy still lives. One day you will die.

re: The New Season: 2007 - 2008

Yeah, it's a touchy topic here. A lot of people, myself included, aren't happy about it. Maybe they should've moved it to FX?

Speaking of Fox, the cable network G4 is reporting that the network has chosen "House" to occupy the cushiest timeslot on television in the future-the post-Super Bowl timeslot the next time Fox airs the game. I can't remember when that is but it's either this coming season (January/February 2008) or the season after (January/February 2009). That pretty much guarantees at least 40 million viewers for that episode.

Edit: It's this coming season, so it airs on February 3, immediately after Super Bowl LXII (42).

I've always been told I should watch House, I just never really started watching it and I'm way behind now, right? From what I have seen, it looks very interesting, I'm sure I'll watch it after the Super Bowl.

re: The New Season: 2007 - 2008

If you started watching now, you're at the end of season 3. The first 2 seasons are available online (I think they're available for purchase from iTunes) and DVDs might be out; they could also be on Fox's website.

Also today, the cable network GSN (Game Show Network) announced that it has acquired the rights to the short-lived ABC game show "Show Me The Money", a high-stakes game show best remembered more for Captain Kirk's (host William Shatner) spontaneous dancing than anything. The series, originally cancelled by ABC after 5 of 7 episodes, will air Tuesdays at 8 PM beginning June 12; The GSN run also includes the 2 previously unaired episodes-these will air July 17 & 24.

Edit: And also coming out is perhaps the most ridiculous renewal story ever: The cable network MTV gave the creators of the show "Human Giant" 24 hours this past Friday and Saturday to get 1 million hits to their website to keep their show around, and they had full reign over MTV and MTV2 to do it. A couple days and 1.2 million hits later, this act of ridiculousness has earned the show a second season. The creators are on record as saying "if they couldn't think we could do it, they got 2 words for you".

5/23 Edit: Today marks the official end of the 2006-07 TV season. CBS will win the season in total viewers for the 5th straight year, while Fox will win the coveted 18-49 demo (thanks, of course, to the Idol juggernaut) for the 3rd straight year.

re: The New Season: 2007 - 2008

And news from NBC yesterday: It took new NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly 3 months to go from "You're Hired" to "You're Fired". Just 3 months after getting a new 3-year deal, The Peacock fired him yesterday after it finished the TV season in 4th place out of 5 (OK, 4 if you're not counting The CW). His replacements are Ben Silverman and Marc Graboff. Silverman, in the past, has helped bring several foreign TV shows to the US with great success, including the hit UK shows Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Big Brother, and The Office. Graboff is a veteran TV exec who mostly focuses on the business side of things. Whether or not they can stop NBC's slide since the days of Friends & Seinfeld remains to be seen.

re: The New Season: 2007 - 2008

More schedule changes at Fox today: "On The Lot", dangerously close to becoming an extremely critical ratings failure (which has to be delightful to "Drive" fans like myself considering it would've bumped Drive off for the summer), has had its Monday edition dropped and will now air only on Tuesdays. effective immediately. The decision comes after this Monday's episode, based on the fast overnight ratings, managed an extremely embarrassing 3.4 million viewers (Full ratings for Tuesday aren't available but it did a bit better). It will now air every Tuesday except July 10 (Pre-empted for the Major League Baseball All-Star Game; That show airs Monday, July 9) with the 2-night finale still on for August 13 & 14. If it makes it that far, of course. The next 2 Tuesday episodes of "The Loop" move to Sundays on June 24 and July 1. This Monday will have a "House" repeat at 8 PM, then a "Hell's Kitchen" repeat on June 11. From June 18 on, most Mondays will be filled with animation repeats at 8, with new Hell's Kitchen episodes at 9.

6/1 Edit: It was announced today that the upcoming 4th season of "Battlestar Galactica" will also be the show's final season.

re: The New Season: 2007 - 2008

Weekly Nielsen Ratings Report for Week Ending 6/3/07 (season premiere):
The new TV season is (sort of) upon us, so I'm back from a brief post-sweeps break to resume the weekly ratings reports for the new season. A couple of quick FAQs first since a few people have asked me some common questions:
Who determines the ratings? A company called Nielsen Media Research Inc. They use "people meters" in participating households to sample who's watching certain shows when. Usually said samples are based on 15-30 minute increments, whereas networks go by 6-minute increments, which is considered the timeframe most people watch and see at least one commerical.
How many viewers equal a ratings point? When calcuating what are called "fast overnights", 1 ratings point equals roughly 1.1 million households, or 1% of all U.S. households. When final ratings are tallied, 1 ratings point equals about 1.9 million viewers on broadcast TV, and just under 1.1 million viewers on cable TV.
What are the primetime viewing hours? As follows:
ABC, CBS, NBC-7-11 PM Sunday, 8-11 PM all other nights (the 7 PM hour is usually filled by local programming-local/national news, entertainment news shows like "Entertainment Tonight" and "Access Hollywood", and syndicated game shows like "Wheel Of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!"); Fox-7-10 PM Sunday, 8-10 PM all other nights (Fox networks go local at 10 for news or syndicated programs); The CW-7-10 PM Sunday, 8-10 PM Monday-Friday (Saturdays feature local programs, movies, and live sports-usually baseball, NBA, NHL, and NCAA Basketball)
When do ratings weeks run? Monday-Sunday. Weekly ratings then are released the following Wednesday except when a federal holiday falls on the preceeding Monday, in which case ratings are released the following Thursday, a day late.
What's the big deal with this "insert adjective here" 18-49 demo we hear so much about? They're considered the age range with the most buying power and most likely to do shopping and be influenced by advertising, so advertisers pay much more to reach these viewers. Same for the 25-54 and 18-34 demos on cable.
Why aren't ratings calculated for some programs? This is fairly rare, but if a program, or part of it, airs commercial/ad-free, Nielsen doesn't record the ratings for that program or portion of it since it thus generates no ad revenue (usually sponsors pay an undisclosed amount in exchange). This often is for programming related to politics or breaking news coverage, or occasionally sports.
What are these "Sweeps" that happen a couple times a year? Usually in February and May (maybe November too), Sweeps are periods the networks use to set advertising rates for upcoming parts of the season, as well as next season. They want the rates to be high so the nets pull out all the stops between ratings stunts, major plot twists, finales, etc. November's also obviously important for the network that has the NFL's Super Bowl, the godfather of all ratings draws. Not to mention the ratings drawn in said periods plays a part in determining a show's fate after this season.
Will I ever put some shows over that I haven't before here or not bury ones I've always put over? Not likely. But that's why certain people love my reports. You know who you are. I love you all too. Hahaha.

Now then, let's get this party started...
Record lows were the norm across the nets last week, which isn't terribly surprising because it's the summer season, when far fewer people are watching TV because they're out & about and most major series are in reruns. Evident in that only 4 shows managed over 10 million viewers last week, well below a normal week during the regular season...yep, a sure sign that we're free of "American Idol" for 8 months again. So we'll start with the big newsmaker last week-Fox. A rare move was made when, to try and appease some uber-director guy named Steven Spielberg, The Fox bumped the season finale of "House" back to this week, not only after the May Sweeps ended but meaning it aired without the almighty Idol lead-in, but rather a lead-in of "On The Lot". So far more people have gotten Off The Lot, as evidenced by last week-Monday's final 2 hour episode in that timeslot drew only 2.9 million viewers. That's less than Fox's other critical ratings failure, "Drive", averaged. Tuesday's 1 hour show struggled to get to 4 million viewers, losing it's timeslot to all but (of course) The CW. House saw a steep ratings drop for its season finale because of the date change and no Idol, but it's 17 million viewers were still far and away the week's best. But 25 million tuned in last year, so that's not good, but again attribute it largely to the schedule change and no Idol. The only other shows to reach dobule-digits last week were "CSI: NY", "CSI", and "So You Think You Can Dance", which returned for the summer season to relatively good numbers-about 9.3 million for 2 hours on Wednesday, which went up to 10.6 million Thursday. That was a solid 2nd and also built on it's "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?" lead-in. That's about all that was good. Now the bad-NBC scored it's smallest prime-time weekly audience sine at least 1991 last week-only 4.8 million viewers. That same week The Peacock gave entertainment division chief Kevin Reilly his walking papers. No word on if The Donald told him "You're Fired". Also being made much of is the CBS Evening News-The Eye figured making Katie Couric the first major female anchor of a nightly news show would help ratings. It actually has hurt ratings. One week after the news drew it's smallest audience in about 20 years, it followed up with just 5.5 million last week-it's smallest audience in about 20 years. It's now a distant 3rd behind 2nd-place NBC and new leader ABC. Also on CBS, new summer reality stunt "Pirate Master" debuted Thursday with just 7 million-2nd on the night but it didn't beat ABC's National Spelling Bee coverage by much. The CW's latest summer sizzler, "Hidden Palms", was more fizzler than sizzler, with just 1.6 million on Wednesday. While that isn't terribly bad if you're The CW, that's still below that ideal threshold for the network (you'd like to have at least 2 million. 2.5 million gets you by, 3 million is ideal-only WWE Smackdown and America's Next Top Model, when it's airing, are expected to do near or over 4 million-the latter regularly does much higher, as in 5-7 million). And before I forget, "Studio 60" finally returned from hiatus to finish up its first season (and only season, it was already cancelled). Only 4.1 million cared or didn't realize "ER" finished it's season already. And for those few hockey fans out there, about 1.6 million tuned in Saturday night for NBC's Stanley Cup Finals coverage. Probably far more that were able to find it on the hard-to-find cable network it was on before (hint for future: It's called Versus/Vs., formerly Outdoor Life Network/OLN).

On cable, the network Lifetime, which only targets women, drew 3.5 million viewers for the series premiere of it's new show "Army Wives". This is significant for 2 reasons-One, it's Lifetime's biggest series premiere crowd ever (23 years). Two, just one hour earlier a rerun of the broadcast show it's sort of based on, "Desperate Housewives", drew 3.9 million. Over on the NBC-owned USA Network, the 2 hour premiere of "The Starter Wife" drew 5.4 million on Thursday. That's not only a strong number for USA (especially for a show besides its usual big draws-WWE Raw and Monk), but during said premiere it beat all the shows on the other NBC-owned network, NBC. Ah, the sweet smell of coincidence. More signifcantly, the premiere was also the top 18-49 program on basic cable so far this year (basic cable excludes the pay/premium networks such as HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax).

The Week's Top 10 Most Watched Shows, in order: "House", "CSI", "Two And A Half Men, Thursday's "So You Think You Can Dance", "CSI: NY", "NCIS", "Boston Legal", "CSI: Miami", Wednesdays Dance, "Shark".

One other morning news item-"Jericho", originally cancelled by CBS after it's first season, may soon be un-cancelled. Reportedly, fans have protested the decision through phone calls, letters, email, and even 25 tons of peanuts (that's 50,000 pounds). That's the same response that a U.S. general in World War II made to a German demand for surrender at the Battle of the Bulge. A decision on if the show comes back is imminent, if it does happen a midseason run is likely. The show drew very high ratings from the start until CBS put it on a midseason hiatus, and viewership nosedived when it returned. CBS let it air out but then, in a bit of a surprise move, did not renew it for a second season. Thus this drive began, with at least some success-the show may be back and the nuts will be donated to charity and to the troops overseas. Memo to my fellow Drive fans-we need to try this with Fox. It might work.

Edit: The Jericho stunt worked. CBS has ordered 7 episodes. When they premiere is TBA. And they said please stop sending them nuts.
