Forgotten Cartoons - Page 3

I'm a huge fan of 70s and 80s cartoons. Some of the earliest I remember were Thudarr the Barbarian (that was so funny!) or Rocket Robin Hood (even more hilarious). Then as time went on I watched (religiously) shows like Masters of the Universe and Transformers. Those were the best shows ever, they were so original and creative. Skeletor to this day is still the no.1 bad guy. He is my favorite cartoon character. Then you had some early Japanese anime to watch like Thunderbirds, Astroboy and Robotech.

Robotech is another I really loved. I watched all of the series they came out with (Macross, Southern Cross, Invid Invasion). I fell in love with those Valkyries, especially the trainer Rick got stuck into.

hehe so much to talk about. Voltron was a cool show, I remember watching some episodes when I lived in Australia. Before they had cats they had cars. The episodes with cars were much more violent too, awesome stuff. Anyways, I'll give a list of my favorites...

• Disney things - GummiBears and Tailspin in particular - took me a while to like these ones. Gummi Bears still has the most catchy intro song.

• Kidd Video (see you on the flipside!)
  
• Captain N (the original Nintendo cartoon) - Simon Belmont was the best!
  
• Centurions (Power Extreme!)
  
• Star Blazers (awesome show but I read the comic more)

As you can see I watched a lot of stuff. I don't think that covers all of it but you get the point.

If you mean Robots in Disguise, yeah it's pretty sad. Though it was targeted specifically towards the younger audience, even in Japan. I never had high hopes for this one though.

Wow, I remember COPS, and that opening! As B.P. Vest would say, "It's crime fighting time!" You better leave BraveStarr alone. He's the strength of the BEAR-BEAR-BEAR!!! Eyes of the HAWK-HAWK-HAWK!!! And a whole bunch of other stuff. The only thing I remember about Thundercats was part of the opening, and the bad guy, the very aptly named Mumm-Ra (and his pet dog, Ma-Mutt). Ah, early cartoons.

Now how could I forget Astroboy??? Speaking of which, isn't there supposed to be a theatrical release sometime soon called "Metropolis" that's sorta based on Astroboy/Tetsuwan Atom? People close to the late Osamu Tezuka are responsible for it anyways, to my knowledge.

Any of you guys ever watch Gatchman/Battle for the Planets/G-Force. That one fruity show. But fruity in a good way. But they changed Fuhrer X's name to Computron! And made Berg Katze a man!!!

Wow I haven't thought about COPS in a long time. That was a great cartoon. The cars were way cool too!! And sorry Gundamfire, I know which cartoon you are thinking about, but I can't think of the name. Again, this is off subject too, but I liked Bubblegum Crisis.

I remember when they tried to do a re-make of he-man and that ended up in failure. Hell, even Beastwars is a pretty bad continuation of the Transformers saga.

I only remember the action figures that were released in the early 90s (complete with "Master's Action"!!!); is this what you're talking about? In any case, He-Man is set make a comeback again, later next year. The new action figure line will coincide with the release of a one hour television special. Seems like they're bringing all the old heroes back these days. When will they bring back She-Ra, no, more rather, Princess Aurora???

I didn't Beast Wars (known as Beasties for some reason in Canada) was that bad. The story made an honest attempt of fitting and adding to the original animated series' mythos. Beast Machines, now that was sad. But as we all know, both pale in comparison to both the original cartoon series, and the achingly awesome movie.

The interesting thing about the bad guys in that show was that all served some freaky giant skeletal bull who lived inside this big volcano; only expect the viewer never got to see the beast, just its shadow. Tex Hex and his goons would always be cowering before it.

Yeah, it's a very early Tatsunoko production (Gatchaman) that was brought over here a variety a times under different names (Battle of the Planets, G-Force, Eagle Riders). Nonetheless, the characters are the same (five heroes work as a team to fight against the evil Galactor organization). Jason (Joe in the Japanese version) was just one of the characters, but he wasn't the leader, I think. I only ever saw a few episodes of the first series (G-Force version).

It may be worth pointing out that Yoshitaka Amano (well known in the video game world for his FF art) did the character designs for the original series.

Wasn't it Princess Adora? I dunno, I just hated Bow, the guy who bore a heart on his chest. Talk about born wuss. I remember seeing a cool episode where He-man goes to help She-ra. I remember because I watched it with my cousin who was pissed when She-Ra needed He-Man's help to defeat Hordak. I love He-man to death. Between me and my brother we had all the action figures except for a select few (Merman and Trapjaw).

Yeah I noticed Beastwars was changed to Beasties... i thought it had something to do with YTV?

lol you think that's messed up? What about MASK? The heroes secret base was under a gas station that was right next to a volcano, go figure.

I actually have a tape given to me by a friend that has all the season openings and endings of G-Force. It lasted quite a long time and looked like it had some cool characters. Of course it had all the typical people. Good looking hero, his babe who's ultra gorgeous, the little kid who's a genius, and the big fatty.

Yoshitaka Amano... his artwork is the stuff that depicts FF characters ala Rennaisance style right? I never was into that but you can find his pictures of just about any FF character. I guess some people really liked it.

Voltron (Loved the vehicle team series. Pretty decent story here.)

Battle of the Planets (these new DVDs rule!)

Speed Racer (still play with my die-cast Mach 5 and Shooting Star. )

Astroboy

Yeah that was a total disappointment. I don't know how they made a Conan series while omitting head chopping scenes, nude princesses or camel punching. The bad guy was a wuss too, Conan was always yelling his name "RATHAMON!!"

As for Transfomers the Movie, I've watched that so many times I pretty much know the script. I remember seeing it in the theaters too... and yes I cried when Optimus Prime died. Springer was a cool character and had it not been for Jerry Springer I would probably have chosen it for my alias. Actually, thinking back I liked all the double changers (Springer, Astrotrain, Blitzwing, and one other). My favorite transformer however recieved the smallest spotlight; Soundwave. I loved that voice and the little tapes he had (especially Rumble and Frenzy). hehe my favorite part is when Starscream kicks Megatron (How do you feel oh mighty leader?! <boot>). A mark of being a true fan is knowing the intergalactic greeting - ba wip grana wip nini bon!
