Well I guess I meant physically nothing stands up to them. It involves mostly politics like rights and potential danger with no talk on how to counteract that danger. I tell you what: think of the X-Men, minus the Sentinels, and the story that goes on with that. That is basically True Blood lol

The show does take place in the south, so its hard to display the opinions of other demographics besides rednecks.

The point about just red-neck homophobe assholes hating on vampires: First of all since it is based in the south, that is the stereotype of the uninformed. Secondly since the books are basically written around the premise that they are second rate citizens, a euphemism for African Americans in the South, that is the people that exacerbate those racial tensions. Again - probably short sighted by the Charlaine Harris and Alan Ball, but I believe that is where it comes from. Third, you do meet people that are against vampires that aren't gun toting rednecks later on.


The point about humans not being so weak: The majority of vampires are attempting to put on a pretty face, irregardless of what they really are, in order to integrate themselves into the world as well as make money off of what they are. From the view point of the show, you have the ability to see both sides. Both the face they put on for show and the rough, bloody, and terrible side that humans atr large do not see, even if they still do fear them. Humans in general are not even aware of actions such as the one with Bill and 'the girl' who we later know as Jessica. As to whether CIA, FBI, etc know about these kinds of actions, we are led to believe - in the books at least - that there are vampire operatives that are involved with these branches of the government that keep their business out of the public eye. I assume there are kick backs and other bribes in order to keep themselves safe.


Basically it's a question of suspending your beliefs. Yes, most of this is completely implausible to some and therefore it ruins the enjoyment of the show, but I choose to not dissect it from here till gone and just enjoy the story.

Have you read the books, or just watched the show? It's been a while since I read them, but if I recall correctly she goes more into detail about lots of things, that I assume I am filling in with my brain when I watch the show. Perhaps that is why I don't really even go there when I watch the show.

It's been a while since I read it, so please forgive if I am remembering incorrectly, but I do believe the first book sets up the scene, so to speak, and might get a little more in depth about what governments feel about vamps.

Also, all the books are told from Sookie's POV, so you don't see a lot of what you see in the shows - it happens without her knowing until after the fact, if she ever knows at all.

Same thing with Burn Notice. Miami isn't THAT big of a place to not let things overlap...

Perhaps it is a taste issue. I found the Anita Blake books HORRID. I could NOT suspend my disbelief long enough to read those books without being stomach churningly annoyed by the fact that it's clearly a Mary Sue where the author writes herself as the main character and every ridiculously smoking hot boy in that universe is inexplicably in crazy love with her.

That being said, I see a little bit of that in CH's books and even The Hollows which I also enjoy, but not as blatant or annoying.

Regardless, I have to agree with TLA on the suspension of disbelief issue - you have to kind of ignore those points to enjoy any of these books or shows. (Though I do give Kim Harrison mad props for really thinking out a completely plausible world for The Hollows books.) But I mean really, just how plausible is Star Trek? How real is 24? Lost? Dexter? Hell, even shows like A-Team or Miami Vice. All these things we enjoy as entertainment rely on us being able to drop reality at the door, and this includes True Blood.

Perhaps you just don't enjoy the show enough that you find yourself thinking about things other than what's happening on screen. Perhaps it's the acting or the writing that takes you out of it and that is why you are not even focusing on the story when watching it and nit picking at the 'implausible' world. I understand that. I have done that to movies that I just couldn't get into. You find yourself going "That's stupid! No one would do that!"

Or perhaps you are annoyed with how vampires are being portrayed in the show and it makes your brain rail against the show as a whole because of it. You mentioned the part with Bill and the Tribunal as being unrealistic or at least an indication of how ridiculous the humans are portrayed. That was a brutal scene to watch for me. Bill was a sympathetic character and I didn't want to watch him go through that. I also didn't want to think he was capable of it. The brutality is sometimes hard to watch in this show and other times makes some of the show's best moments.

I suppose there might just be something about the show that irks you, because you are able to suspend your belief long enough to believe in superheroes and space travel, I am feeling like the plausibility of the world is not the root of your dislike.

About halfway through Season 2, and I have to say I am liking it a helluva a lot better than the first season. Not only that, but I FINALLY got what I wanted. I am in the sub-plot where Bill and Sookie (spelling?) are in Texas to rescue Eric's maker. I won't reveal any spoilers, but the female liason in Texas was talking about the fact that one of Goderick's vampires wants to declare war on humanity because of the wackadoo church, and she basically says something to the effect of, "If we declare open war on humanity, the Federal Government will bomb us back to the Stone-Age."

I know it's picky, but that is all I wanted, basically an acknowledgement by the writers of this show that if there were creatures such as vampires, that while they may rule the night and be powerful, that humanity could literally wipe them off the face of the Earth with our military and technology.
