Mad Men

So it looks like they're re-showing this on BBC on Sundays, first two episodes were this weekend. Looks pretty promising, though I gotta say the red-headed secretary is the main thing with my attention right now

Absolutely beasted seasons one-three over the summer but managed to savour season four a bit more and i am finally done. It's probably not been good for my heath, since i've taken up smoking and began drinking straight whiskeys on a very regular basis, but i reckon it's worth it. Show is the best thing on TV.

This thread is, I think worse than the thread for The Wire...another show - which is FOUR seasons in and has no love? I'm losing faith in the forum! Just finished watching Season 4 and I'm shocked at what they've done with Don...I'm curious to see whether this new marriage will last; especially after the comment made about him by the blonde, 'until she realises you only like the beginning of things'...deep shit.

...but yeah, fully recommend this show to anybody wanting to start a new show - or even if you don't, start waching this anyway.

Mad Men just got a renewal, which means there will be no new episodes in 2011 and it will likely premiere just about a year from now.

For everyone who was thinking about catching up, you have the next twelve months to go do that.

Got into this properly over Christmas and most recently blitzed through season 4.

My first impression was that it was absolutely amazing, series one really is very good and the episode where they have that party and the new woman is there that makes them uncomfortable features Don Draper with one of the greatest facial expressions of all time, utter disdain. At that point I thought it was going to be some like massive social critique and though there's elements of that maybe my expectations were too high, meaning in seasons 2 and 3 I at times felt myself underwhelmed, felt it leaning a little towards style over substance, such as the ep. when Don disappears in California. But season 4 with the change of scene really benefited and now I can't wait for the new stuff. I'm anticipating some very awkward situations with Don's new wife being a copywriter and suggesting ideas that clash with Peggy.

Character wise, Pete Campbell has been my favourite since that scene in season one when he talks to Peggy about going hunting and having a woman bring him a meal...Sterling is awesome as well, pretty much everything he says is quotable. Don I have mixed feelings about but that's always the case when someone is seen in so much depth, the relationship with the real Draper's wife and her death in season four is very very well done.

I don't as yet think it's on the same level as Wire and Sopranos, but one thing that does stand out over them is the female characters in general, I think they get more attention and naturally with the era it's in they have a very distinct social role, so seeing how Peggy and Joan interact with that is great.

Betty Draper, meanwhile, is the spawn of the devil. I'm not sure I've ever hated a character that much.

Hell yeah about time. I alway try and get people into this show but they always ask me what goes on and I usually end up saying something like "well not much but it's still awesome".

I need to sell it better, I find it hard to explain why I love it so much, I urge people to give it a try though!

I find with Mad Men a simple "it's really *bleep*ing cool" tends to suffice, sell the superficial side
