Caprica

quote
Sci Fi Channel has greenlit "Caprica," the much-anticipated prequel to hit series "Battlestar Galactica."

"Caprica" will star Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson and Polly Walker, and will be set 50 years prior to "Galactica's" seminal attack on human civilization by those dreaded 'droids the Cylons. Family-drama-themed series will focus on the Earthlike planet of Caprica as two rival families deal with, among other topical issues, the broader implications of their society's emerging artificial intelligence technology sector.

Produced by Universal Cable Prods., "Caprica" will be exec produced by "Galactica" masterminds Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, along with Remi Aubuchon ("24"). The pilot was co-written by Aubuchon and Moore and directed by Jeffrey Reiner ("Friday Night Lights.")

Having already produced a two-hour backdoor pilot, Sci Fi is aiming for an early 2010 bow for the series, with production starting around the middle of next year, probably in Vancouver, where both "Galactica" and the spinoff's pilot were shot.
"Caprica" will focus on two families, the Greystones and the Adamas, and its plotlines likely will include, among others, the origins of the Cylons and the events that led up to what we saw in Battlestar Galactica (both the classic and updated series).
Even though it's almost 2 years away I now am really excited seeing that this project will become reality, hopefully it will be a fitting beginning of sorts to the entire Galactica saga and can live up to the remake's high standards.

Sci Fi has ordered 20 hours, including the 2-hour pilot, so it looks like a first season of 16-18 episodes.

Note: The 2-hour pilot will first be released on DVD and digital download (iTunes & perhaps Amazon). The release date is April 21.

re: Caprica

The Greystones?

I don't recognize that name, who are the Greystones? Not surprising to hear this, with the Galactica series coming to it's scheduled close and millions of fans screaming for more, this should have been expected to happen.

re: Caprica

The futon critic has screened the 2-hour (OK, really about 92 minutes) pilot, due out in stores April 21, read below if you want to know a bit about it (a few spoilers):

Simple summary: Keep expectations very tempered. At first, anyway.

I don't generally like prequels...
Still with the lack of decent sf on tv these days I might watch a few episodes..because there isn't anything else to watch...

re: Caprica

The trailer is now on iTunes for free, and you can now pre-order the movie (coming April 21). Not sure how much it is on DVD, on iTunes-where I'll be getting it from-it's $15. The season pass gets you the 1 minute trailer now and then you get the movie on 4/21. Works for me because I can live without the DVD extras and stuff and this way I'll get the movie faster since I was getting it anyway.

The extended sneak peek they aired during the Battlestar Galactica finale did a better job of showing off just what the series will be like. Once you get over the fact that it's not going to be Galactica (no big outer space battles, mythical puzzles to solve, etc.) and that it's going to be more family & perhaps political drama rather than space opera it looks pretty good and I'm now more excited and less baised than I might've been.

Holy crap! That was actually really really cool. At first I thought it was some vampire show haha. Very interesting start to the series and I can't wait for more. What did you all think?

re: Caprica

It's up on iTunes now ($14.99) but I didn't get the "available for download" notification-I pre-ordered it-until I got to work today. I'll download it when I get home tonight and, if time permits, will watch tonight. Otherwise I'll watch it tomorrow then I'll comment on it.

In the meantime, BG & Caprica were the topic of discussion at The Paley Festival last night. Part 1 of the recap after the jump:
http://www.thefutoncritic.com/rant.aspx?id=20090420_battlestar

Part 2 should be up tonight or tomorrow.

re: Caprica

Just finished watching it today while on breaks at work...kinda complicated at first and I'll probably need to watch it at least once more to fully get it all, but for the first time through it was quite good. I'm guessing a few scenes in the first few minutes will be cut out of the TV version (all the nudity & frakking of course, maybe some other stuff) and while it did come off as a bit of a "teen drama" as expected it had enough twists and the like to hold my interest. The last 10 minutes, though, sealed it for me-not only did we witness the actual creation of the Cylons, but the first Cylon with the human personality/mindset, just like we saw in Galactica. Very clever technology throughout as well, especially the holothings, already forgot what they're called. And of course I felt the emotionally powerful stuff was still good and liked the music-nice to hear more of those great drum & percussion pieces during some of those action sequences, especially the one during the Cylon testing sequence.

While some of it wasn't quite what I expected it's already started answering a couple of the questions I still had after Galactica. Now it sucks that the series is still about a year away, but when it does premiere I definitely will be there. Good start, looks like Ron & Dave are sticking to what worked before.

Syfy...geez, I HATE that new spelling...announced the premiere date for the series earlier today: January 22. 2 hour premiere at 9 PM ET, then it goes to its regular timeslot the following week, Fridays at 10 PM ET.

re: Caprica

And the other day Syfy released new "key art" for Caprica...

Nothing wrong with trying to make it sexy like here, but what's with the apple? Too many apples in ads & the like these days. Otherwise, no complaints. Except still 2 months until the premiere.

re: Caprica

I dunno, a solid meh from me. The movie I watched made me kind of, I don't know, disinterested in the whole thing. This feels like a Joey spin off from Friends situation rather than a Fraiser spin off from Cheers success story to me at the moment. I'm still wondering if I should watch it or not... I've been disappointed by the beginning so far.
