Tower of Orthanc Battle Strategies

Your end is near...

The Tower of Orthanc is the secret mission consisting of 20 floors, only accessed when you reach the 10th level with a character, and beat the Hamburg Courtyard mission with that character. Before even venturing into the Tower, I suggest maxing out all your skills if you haven't done so already. A good way to do this is just replay old missions and perfect them using your more advanced combos. You'll need every bit of health you can get.

In the Tower, you recover a litle health and 5 long range ammo every time you beat a level in your climb to the top, however, you do not have access to any potions or spare arrows. Imo, the best character equipped for this battle is Aragorn, but he's best for every mission imo ^^'. But, particularly in this mission Aragorn is a huge help because you really need a good balance between long range and short range, and that's exactly what Aragorn gives you. Of course, you can still beat the mission with Legolas and Gimli, but for your first time I suggest using Aragorn.

[The Techniques]

The most important to learn are the following:

Judgement- gives you the highest amount on your skill meter. It also is very powerful and starts with a fierce attack.
Death Charge- easy to pull off, and still quite devastating on weak foes.
Rising Attack- trips up any foes near you while you're getting up.
Orc Bane/Bane of Saruman- same button configuration, but the former is for orcs, and the latter for Uruk-hai. Basically an auto-kill. You cannot be touched while doing it, so just sit back, parry, and wait for them to strike first.
All health improvements- Health is key in the Tower so max it out.

Finally, just a home-made technique, pretty basic stuff: if you get knocked over, pull off a rising attack and knock your foe to the ground. Then dig your weapon into them for a kill -- works good on Berserkers (who I will get into more detail about later).

Also, try using the "wrath/rage" techniques. You can just charge them up while waiting for your enemies to rush you, and thus if you time it right you can take out a few at a time. Beware, however, if there are archers in the level they can easily pick you off while charging.

[The Monsters]

Most monsters can be handled just using the Bane techniques, however, you will never pick up any Perfects that way. Also, be warned that if you continually parry, eventually the monster will do an unblockable hit to you, and trust me it does hurt your health quite effectively (and every monster possesses one of these moves).

Orcs:
These are the weakest of the bunch. You'll only encouter two types in the Tower, namely the generic ones who couldn't be weaker, and then there are the shield bearers who can be frustrating if you don't break their shield. For the most part, however, you shouldn't waste any health on these pathetic monsters.

Basic:
These Orcs have nothing special to them. Their defense, offense, and speed all rank among the worst. They can easily be taken out using any kind of combo, but if they're coupled with other monsters you may just want to take them out using Orc Bane to be safe (at least for your first time through).

Shield-bearers:
These Orcs are a little more special in the fact that they have shields. Shields block all Speed Attacks, however, can be broken using any devastating attack, combo that begins with a devastating attack, or the end of a combo beginning with a speed attack. After their shield is destroyed, they are even slower than Basic Orcs. Remember, however, that you do not need to break their shields to pull off an Orc Bane for the auto-kill.

Archers:
Archers are pretty much the only long-ranged characters. They come in three varities: basic (which can be seen from floors 6-9), special (only seen on floor 10) and flame (which can be seen from floors 11-20). Archers are taken out in one arrow shot (if you're on Normal Mode), or simply a slash of your weapon. Another good strategy is to get behind an archer and just parry...chances are he'll be hit by some friendly fire and die that way.

Basic:
These archers have weak damage and do not shoot as fast as more advanced units. The best suggestion is either run around the middle circle stopping to shoot, or just getting behind an archer and letting the others kill him. Just make sure your parrying while you wait.

Special:
There are only 2 of these, both seen on floor 10. Basically, they fire not only flame arrows, but also little flame explosions that explode on impact. They're not too much to be worried about, just stay out of the middle and you'll avoid their little fire explosions. Also, one thing to note is that they can take more damage than normal archers.

Flame:
These archers pack a little more punch. If they really get on you with a barrage, you could be done for. They also shoot faster, and more continually. Again, however, imploy the same strategies you did for regular archers (maybe with a tad bit more caution) and you should be fine.

Uruk-hai:
These devastating monsters come in three forms. You'll encounter all three during your 20 level treck through the tower. You'll see the Brown versions through the first 9 floors, the Silver versions from the 10th-17th floors (excluding the 11th, 15th, and 16th), and finally you'll encounter the third, and most devastating kind, the Berserkers in the 16th, 17th, and 18th floors.

Brown:
These fighters are pretty weak, and you'll see them through the first few floors. They're not as fast as you are, and generally can't keep up. Their attacks are relatively weak, and their defense isn't great either. Not much to worry about in this department. You can take them out with the Bane of Saruman combo or just use basic combos like Judgement, Death Charge, etc. to maybe get yourself into Perfect mode and pick up some perfect kills in the beginning.

Silver:
These are more frenzied warriors, and you'll experience them in the later parts of the tower. They attack more vigorously, and generally can catch up to you quite easily. I strongly suggest just sitting back and parrying until you can pull of a Bane of Saruman combo, however, they can still be dealt with the Rising Attack/Kill combo, or just legitimate combos. Not the hardest opponents, but not to be trifled with either.

Berserkers:
Here we go. Berserkers pretty much block everything you hit them with. You can catch them with the occasional rising attack and then finish them off, however, they generally back off when you're getting up. Really, the only way to beat them is to use the Bane of Saruman. Also be warned that they are faster than you and will catch up to you.

Trolls:
Big creatures coming in two different forms. The first is a joke, offering no speed of attack, no relentlessness, no defense, no long range weapon, and no protection against long range weapons. The next kind, however, is an armored tough unit, with tree logs for long range shots at their disposal and invicibility against long ranged weapons. You'll begin encountering Trolls on the 15th floor, and see them again on the 18th, 19th, and 20th.

Black Cave Trolls:
These trolls are weak. There armor isn't tough, and basically you can just fierce attack them once and continually mash the button to slay them. They should be done in no time, and, when alone, pose no threat whatsoever. When paired with the next troll, just run around, periodically running up to the Fangorn Forest Troll and he will smash the Black Cave Troll until it's dead.

Fangorn Forest Troll:
These are armored tough units. They have invincibility to long ranged attacks, and come adorned with their own. I suggest running up to them, hopping backwards, fierce attacking them, hopping backwards, etc. until they are dead. Unlike the Black Cave Trolls they bring their attacks swiftly whenever you are near, so you must dodge and jump out of the way.
