Peeta vs. Gale

So, of course reading through the first book and even throughout the rest of the series, an underlining question is who will Katniss choose? Peeta Mellark - the boy with the bread, or Gale Hawthorne, hunting partner? I know some people who were bound and determined on her picking one of the other. I, however, really liked them both, and completely understood Katniss' indecision. Peeta was one of my favourite characters - he was just so sweet and caring! But I really appreciated Gale's boldness and ability to stand up for what he believed in.

So what were your thoughts, particularly when reading the first book? Did you have a preference, and why? If not, what made you like them both? Or did you perhaps not like either character?

Oh, I actually didn't find Gale very pushy. That's an interesting look at it, though.

I more thought that Gale accepted that Katniss had to pretend to love Peeta for the cameras. However, just because he knew she had to doesn't mean he could stop himself being jealous. I just love the fight in Gale, and the fact that he will give anything - even his life - to stand up for what he believes in. This is shown more in the later books though, so I guess I should refrain from getting into that.

Don't get me wrong, I adore Peeta. He's so kind and sweet, and self-sacrificing in a different kind of way. He's smart as well, and I can't really find the words to desribe how awesome a person he would be should I meet him in real life. He's the kind of friend you want to have your back. He was my favourite character in Catching Fire, but I really liked him in the first book as well.

Now, in terms of Katniss, I really could not decide who I wanted her to end up with. Even throughout the whole series. Without spoiling anything, I think she did make the right choice, even though I personally could not pick which one she should be with.

I feel Peeta is really in love with Kat. Gale loves her but at the end of the day Peeta will do anything for her. Gales love seems conditional as long as she's doing what he wants her to. With that said they both are good guys.

I'd have to say Peeta. He's sweet, caring... and good lord Katniss has stepped on him like a doormat before and he still loved her nonetheless.
