Is there anyway I can get the following features on a free host?
1. PHP 5+ 2. MySQL (only one db required)
Something optional is that there's no ads, or the ads that show up don't overlap my content.
Thanks.

Yeah, and I've done my best to scan through the hosts in this thread, too. Haven't found any mention of PHP 5.

I know of a host which offers PHP5 as a FastCGI module; but it's not free...let me know if you want a link.

Yeah, I'm interested. What do you mean it runs it as a FastCGI module though?

Yeah, I'm interested. What do you mean it runs it as a FastCGI module though? Basically the default PHP they use on their servers is PHP4; but they set up PHP5 to where it runs alongside the PHP4 in a concurrent environment. You just need a simple .htaccess file to switch everything over, plus your files will need to have a .php5 extension to work right as PHP4 is the default. The link is: http://www.asmallorange.com .

re: [Resource] List of Hosts

Think of it like this.
(Using windows as example)
PHP 4 is running as apache module under php5apache.dll PHP 5 is running under its executable file php-cgi.exe
.php will run using PHP4 and .php5 will run using PHP5. But you can use the .htaccess file to have all .php files run under PHP5.
And the FastCGI is used to speed up api calls between the server and the php 5 executable. (Since it isn't an apache module) The performance increase is not very noticeable for PHP but they are also a RoR host (which runs unbearably slow without it ) so they might as well use it with PHP as well.

Now what exactly is Ruby / RoR? I never figured that out. All I know is it has something to do with design.
