[PHP] Need Help Understanding Certain Custom Made Function.

So I needed to do a script that would count how many lines of code are inside the [code] tags inside of a forum post. So I went ahead and asked on PHP Freaks (because I didn't want to bug you for once =P).

So created the thread, didn't understand a bit of how to do some things, so I asked for someone to please make the function for me. And the guy that made it for me did this for me:

    $lines = array();
    
    if(preg_match_all(CODE, $string, $Matchs, PREG_SET_ORDER)){
        
        foreach($Matchs as $Match){
            
            $test = explode("\r\n", $Match[0]);
            
            if($test[0] = '[cod0]'){
                
                array_shift($test);
                
            }
            
            if($test[count($test)-1] == '[/code]'){
                
                array_pop($test);
                
            }
            
            $lines[] = count($test);
            
        }
        
    }
    
    return $lines;
    
}

Which made me wonder a lot of things. Like:

Do I have to initialize the $string variable to "" in the function parameters declaration?
Where exactly did the guy declare the "$Matchs" variable? He uses it inside the foreach loop, but I don't see an array to be used on the for each loop. So wondering about that, I checked the preg_match_all() function's documentation and it came up with this:

array &$matches

The part I bolded effectively comes as an array parameter... But it has the & Symbol, which in C++ is the address-of operator for pointers, and PHP doesn't have pointers, does it? @_@. Or just, how does that parameter works exactly?

The rest of the questions will come I clear those two first. I need to find a way to phrase them correctly, heh.

1. $string = ""; This simply means if $string doesn't have a value when it's called by the function it is set as "" by default.

2. PHP does support referencing. If you don't use this it will create a copy of the variable/object and update that, rather than the original. This function turns $string into an array called $matchs and does some sort of ordering using preg_set_order.
