i havent played any other mgs game. if i get this when it comes out, would i be able to pick up on whats happening or would i be utterly confused?

You won't be confused per say, but you will be missing out on alot of the depth of it. I would recommend playing the previous three but its up to you.

Past 3? I reccomend the last 4 to be honest. And the two originals if you end up becoming a diehard fan

I would pick up 1/2/3 on the playstation 2 and it's fairly cheap.

if you havnt played the others, you are sadly doomed imo

mg has one of the most in depth and profound storylines i know of in any game

i'v played all the main ones, and the 2 portable ops ones, and am a HUGE fan
and i sometimes still have trouble getting the plot around my head

I doubt you'll be too confused. MGS: Rising is a spin-off of the MGS series. It isn't a direct sequel. So it will have it's own plot and won't be as heavily dependant on the previous games.

Even if what he/she said is true, I really recommend you to play the previous four. These are games you can't skip because of the brilliance behind them.
