Vitamins - How should I take em?

Take 10 of each vitamin for the stats you want to boost (which is the maximum you can take for a single stat anyway), and EV train from there. The EV spread spans from level 2 to level 100 (seeing as you can't level up to level 1), so you probably wont notice any huge stat gains while levelling.

Well the easiest way to get started on EV training is by using vitamins. A single vitamin will boost the respective stat's EVs by 10 points, it takes 4 EVs to gain 1 extra stat point. Also, the maximum amount of total EVs a Pokemon can gain is 510, and the maximum EVs that can be distributed in a single stat is 252.

Now if I wanted to EV train a Growlithe so it gained 252 EVs in attack and 252 in defense (without vitamins), I'd go to the locations where the only Pokemon that appear, are the ones that give out these EVs. Here's a list of some good locations for EV training.

Going by what's shown in that list, I would have to defeat 252 Goldeens and 252 Poliwags to gain the desired EVs (which still leaves 6 left over).

Just on a side note, each Pokemon gives EVs points upon defeating them, it's just a matter of working out which Pokemon you need to find for the EVs you want.

It can be if you just try doing it purely by grinding. If you take advantage of Vitamins, Power items and Pokerus if you're lucky, it can cut your time down immensely, to the point where you first finish a guy and you're thinking "It can't be this easy."

but i just dont get what determines which EV a defeated pokemon gives out?

Depends where you are in the game. Vitamins are way too expensive to buy in bulk early on, and getting the Pokerus virus is extremely rare, the chances are 1 out of around 8,192 (I think). Power items are by far the easiest way to go, as you can just trade them from a different version. The only problem with power items, is if you don't already have them on a different version, it could take a long while before you have the chance to obtain them.

even though the gist of it has already been said

there is NO point in EVing your story pokes (as int eh ones that you go through the game with), just EV your competitive pokemon (those you use to battle online)


I've considered doing it on many occasions, but I prefer just completing the pokedex (regional and then an attempt at national.... i was so close on platinum)

when i've done that, then the new games come out (usually)
