Dead Money Perks [Slight Spoilers]
|
I just leveled up, and was looking through the Perk list, since I recently downloaded Dead Money. There are a few new ones:
- In Shining Armor - Required: Repair 20, Science 70 Ranks: 1 +5 DT against Energy Weapons when wearing any metal armor, and +2 DT when wearing reflective eyewear. Notes: Not that great, if you ask me, as it only works against Energy Weapons.
- Junk Rounds - Required: Luck 6, Repair 45 Ranks: 1 Craft Ammo at the Reloading Bench using alternate materials (Scrap Metal and Tin Cans). Notes: Not sure what this gives. I don't have the requirements to take it now (I've only got 5 Luck), but I'll take a look next level.
- Old World Gourmet - Required: Endurance 6, Survival 45 Ranks: 1 +25% Addiction Resistance. Snack foods all give +50% Health. Scotch, Vodka, and Wine now give health, in addition to normal effects. Notes: Addiction Resistance is nice, and adding health to Scotch, Vodka, and Wine gives another source of healing. However, I don't see any point to the Snack Food boost, as they're all pretty weak to begin with.
- The Professional - Required: Level 6, Sneak 70 Ranks: 1 Sneak Attack Crits with Revolvers, Pistols, and SMGs get +20 damage, whether they're Guns or Energy Weapons. Notes: Interesting. It's a niche skill, but Stealth Characters will love it.
- And Stay Back - Required: Level 10, Guns 70 Ranks: 1 Shotguns have a chance to knock an enemy back. Notes: The Dev's seem to like Shotguns. First Shotgun Surgeon, then this. Not sure how effective it is, but Shotgun users have another way to mitigate damage.
- Heavyweight - Required: Level 12, Strength 7 Ranks: 1 Weapons weighing over 10 pounds weigh half as much. If a weapon is modified and drops below 10 pounds, it doesn't get this benefit. Notes: There is a short list of weapons that benefit from this perk. However, if you're using one of them, it's great to have. I can't take this anytime soon, but I'd be interested in seeing what happens to the weight of a Fat Man if you take this, and also add the Fat Man Little Boy kit. If it works like I think it does, you'd end up with a 7.5 pound Fat Man, instead of a 30 pound Fat Man.
- Hobbler - Required: Level 12, Perception 7 Ranks: 1 Increase in chance to hit target's legs in VATS. Notes: We have Sniper, Center of Mass, and now Hobbler. Between these and Gunslinger/Commando, you might as well set the hit chance at 100% and be done with it. Very nice for VATS users.
That's all the ones I see.

Meh. Heavyweight is the only one I'm interested in.
You can only pick 2 perks from levels 30-35, yes?

That's what the math would indicate. However, most of these perks are actually available before then.
EDIT: Just picked up Junk Rounds. It allows you to create ammo using a single Casing or Hull, 1 piece of Scrap Metal, and 5 Tin Cans. These items are generally easier to find, but they also weigh 1 pound each. That's 6 pounds of weight you'd need to carry around for each bullet you plan to make. Powder, Primers, and Lead, on the other hand, are all weightless.Edit: Dec 21, 10

They all seem pretty crap, I'll be using it as a chance to pick up some of the ones I missed at an earlier level.

You left out Light Touch.
Agl-6 Repair-45
Heavy armor just isnt your thing, so youve learned to customize your light armor for max benefit. While wearing light armor, you gain a +5% critical hit chance, and your enemies suffer a -25% critical hit chance.
Thats pretty freakin sweet right there. My stealth build utilizes travel light, so I move 10% faster. Stack this on top of it and this is an amazing perk.
The Professional isnt a new perk, I already had it on my stealth build.
I was a bit disappointed with the new perks, especially the lack of ones requiring the top end levels.
I settled on Heavyweight, because a lot of my favorite weapons are over 10 pounds, so cutting that in half is huge.
And Stay Back is pretty sweet. It has the chance when firing a shotgun to do a Gauss Rifle caliber knockback to the enemy, with the enemy still being alive when it happens. Ive already knocked a deathclaw down off a hill flying head over heels and he was still alive. Pretty cool. Its really a good time to reload your shotty when you get a knockdown.

I left out Light Touch because it wasn't in my Perk List. Every Perk that I didn't recognize was put in this list, and Light Touch wasn't there.
Also, are you sure about The Professional? I've looked through the New Vegas Perk List on the wiki numerous times, and I never saw it there. If it was there, then either I missed it, or that list is incomplete.

Yep for sure the Professional has always been there. I know this because my stealth character normally clears out buildings/vaults with either a silenced 10mm or 12.7 mm pistol, and that perk allows you to boost the sneak crit damage with pistols and SMGs by like 20 or 25%. Its really a must have for stealth characters.
Not sure why you didnt see light touch. It shouldve been right up there near the top if you have at least 6 AGL and 45 repair. Otherwise its going to be in the grayed outs at the bottom of the list.

*smacks head* That's why I didn't see Light Touch; I was actually able to get it! I was only at Level 2, so I assumed that I wouldn't be able to get any of the new Perks; I therefore only checked the greyed out ones.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised to see no perks requiring level 30+ to take.
I guess they wanted to make it accessible to newer characters being made also, which I have no complaint with. Im digging the Light Touch, Heavyweight, and the And Stay Back perks.
The others are just kinda meh.
The biggest headscratcher for me was Hobbler. I dont know anyone that could find a reason to boost VATS accuracy to the legs, when accuracy to the head or bonus damage to the chest is available.
Junk rounds kinda annoyed me, but then it can serve a purpose for a survivalist RP character, so I guess its cool in that respect. For players that place the no-vendor if possible restriction on themselves, this makes gaining ammunition much easier.
In shining armor would be amazing for power armored characters, IF WE ACTUALLY FOUGHT ENEMIES THAT USED LASER WEAPONS! Holy crap. Bigtime fail, hopefully rectified in further DLC. The only Laser users Ive seen are the RCW carrying Fiends, and lets face it, if you need an extra +7DT against them to take them out, you should be playing something else. Like Hello Kitty Funtime Adventure or something.
The Legion, AND the NCR use conventional weapons. A lot of the Brotherhood employ Gauss rifles. There just really isnt that much in the game to command something like that. The Holograms in Dead Money would qualify, but guess what? You cant take your power armor to the SM.

These perks are stupid imo.
Only thing I would consider getting is In Shining Armor.

Actually, Light Touch is pretty good. It brings total Crit chance up to 28%. Only the Ratslayer gets a 100% Crit chance (and 8% of that goes to waste), but every other weapon in the game still gets the increased Crit chance.

Light Touch would be great if it didn't require wearing light armor. Have fun facing a Deathclaw with that, unless you can switch quickly enough into heavy armor.

I don't know. Deathclaws weren't much of a problem in Fallout 3. Have they changed significantly in New Vegas?

Wanna know a secret? ..... Shhhhhhhh! Dont tell anyone! Okay....okay, c'mere!DEATHCLAWS IGNORE ARMORYou might as well be wearing nothing at all when it comes to Deathclaws, champ. Whether youre in Power Armor, or Sexy Sleepwear, 1-2 hits, and youre history. At least when you wear light armor with this perk, youre boosted by 5% to get a crit against the beast, and it has 25% less of a chance of just straight Crit-Ripping your head off. The real fun will be had on your wasted perk, in shining armor. Good luck finding an enemy that fires laser weapons that you meet on a consistent basis, and that would actually warrant needing +7DT against lasers. Lets see, Protectrons....no contest. RCW wielding Fiend....no contest. Sentry Bot, okay maybe. But you only see those a couple times and eh...Pulse Gun FTMFW. Then all you have left is the gatling laser wielding Paladins, and you actually have to go looking for them and start up a fight. NCR doesnt use em, and neither does the legion. So over the main course of your gameplay, youre not going to have laser weapons used against you often enough to waste a perk slot on it.
