Skill Tiers? Good or Bad Idea?

Tiering is silly at best. Quake Live is a competitive game. It also has a pretty small community. Why fragment it and the hand-holding? Secondly there are 4 tiers, yet tier 3 and 4 contain the majority of the players. So even though there are 4 tiers, there is really only 2. Being tier 4 makes it frustrating finding games. Skill is actually detrimental to your server availability. Generally there is ONE option in your region. Quake series, and quake live infact, survived a VERY long time without enforced tiering. This seems like an attempt to lure console players who are used to enforced tiers, which is silly as they won't be drawn to a game of this complexity anyway.

I think the tier system would be an interesting way to rank servers according to the average skill level of the players. Quakelive has this capability, and it lets people know what they are jumping into. I don't understand how zenimax/iD think it makes sense to reduce accesibility with respect to skill for an OPTIONAL pay to play game. Who do they think PAYS for this game outside of the hardcore gamers that are super into it? The same guys who can't find servers in their region because of tiering...
