They are "solid spirits", meaning that they look and are like humans, except that they're, well, water dweller spirits! But, they can disappear. Yes, water dwellers may breathe underwater.
Vanna's history: Vanna was on the Titanic, in first class, at 20 years of age, in 1912. She was one of the people that drowned in the accident. Since she turned into a water dweller, she swam until she found an island: Waffle Island. She has lived there all the years of her life after that: 97 years.
