I think that I actually gain a sort of reverence for depressing stories like Air and Kanon. The reason being is that I'm emotionally indifferent to your standard anime. Sure, I get excited at good parts and stuff, but I don't feel pain at the loss of a character. Air and Kanon (at least until episode twenty four) are like getting stabbed. I presume that if they are capable of getting me that worked up over well animated drawings, they must have some sort of genius.
Anyway, I'm glad the Makoto arc was where it was. It convinced you that the trend would continue throughout the series, demonstrating that there was actually a high chance of loss. Let me tell you, at the end, I was convinced the anime would be the most depressing I'd had seen aside from Air. Of course, the happy ending nearly made me choke with surprise. Never have I been so fooled by an anime (again, with the exception of Air, which I thought would be happy until about episode 4, at which point I had high hopes of it getting happy again until the end of the Dream Arc.).
