I can understand and agree with most of that post Makkyun. I've actually rather enjoyed the shitstorm on /a/ the ending brought about, and that people would still side with the Cantus users or only sympathise with the Queerats once the big twist came along, that's fascinating how they can side with the clear monsters here simply because they're pretty and humanoid.

Doesn't change the fact it was boring as sin and the characters were not disposable, they were extremely dislikeable at times. Some are more dislikeable it needs to be said. Which is a much worse thing, disposable characters can be ignored, dislikeable ones cannot.
I like the ending, I really do, but to say it was worth what needed to be waded though to get there is laughable. The world was crap, and the characters were crap, and those were all we had for a vast majority of the show.

The Rats did horrible things? Who cares when the target of it all is much more horrible than they. Going back to what I just said up there, you don't give a single solitary *bleep* how much, say, the Space Monsters of Gunbuster are torn to pieces.

The world is "Ok so it's a standard magical fantasy world but everything is like this because the magic psychic powers leak or some shit rather than just being that way. Also society has become atrocious". It doesn't scream compelling to me at all.

I think it's easy to oversimplify the world. I don't think there's anything standard about it. Sure we've seen dystopic futures before, but I've never seen a show where there's a competent futuristic civilization blended with Shinto Buddhist small-village culture and a 1984 Big Brother state before. That's some fascinating stuff. And it's not just a wacky premise born of drugs-- it makes *sense* that a psychic master race in Japan would go this direction. They made it so damn believable. Even if it were something I'd seen before, what makes it interesting isn't how original it was (though that played a part), it's how detailed it was. The thing about world building isn't that you've got to make the basic premise new, you need to make it so detailed that there are always new things to be discovered even in something everyone has seen before. That's what Shinsekai did, that's what Aria did so beautifully (many of the episodes were about finding beauty in things you see all the time), and that's what any good world-building show does.

Still though, damn creative show. Don't see how you can simplify it to something unoriginal like that.
