I see... 

I watched Air first, out of all the KEY stuff, and I thought 13 episodes was nice enough. It probably impaired my judgment on Kanon, which I thought DID DRAG. Clannad trumps both of them though, but Air has a special place somewhere in my top ten for delivering the best emotional finale ever.

It was my anime binge-ing days. I saw Air first, saw the concept and how KEY (and all generic harems) generally works, so it just seemed so slow and get to the point. Like uh, I got most sad over fox girl I thiiink, maybe because they made it quick. What was that girl with the blanket outfit with a lot of foreshadowing over her problem... I wanted them to hurry that one up. I dunno if I want to rewatch them just to confirm it. Dun wanna tear up all over the place and I can't stand old Key graphics anymore. It's REALLY BAD.

I'd prefer it if they sorta melded each girl's story together, it seems somewhat more coherent than "one girl problem at a time". I enjoyed Angel Beats greatly (minus the rush and no development to some of my favourite idiot boys). BAD CHOICE THERE. I hope they do more stuff like that >w<.

Get in line, punk. I agree with Animalover. You think Air was rushed, I think it was efficient. I really don't think any arc in Air *needed* more time. I got the point and I got it beautifully. I needed no more time. I can honestly rate Air as a 10 unemotionally. I agree she's wrong on Kanon. I think it was done exceptionally well as evidence by my, what, 9/10 for that show? But I just think Air was beautiful in its brevity. One straight shot at the importance of family and motherhood articulated in as few words as possible within 13 episodes of excellent direction. I viewed the other girls not as arcs on their own (in which case I could understand your qualms) but as development points for the one arc that mattered- which was Misuzu's. They merely foreshadowed briefly the issues important to the anime, and I imagine to the VN.

Air is perfect to me. I really didn't need the fluff to get extremely attached and feel the full impact.

Best emotional finale ever, indeed. And didn't undermine the whole plot with some magic resolution, either.

Mmhmm, Key is practically painting how harems are supposed to be, but since it's a leading the way, IT CANNOT BE CATEGORISED WITH THEM? Surely, you jest 8D. They define the genre, therefore they can be thrown together. A harem is a harem, and when they concentrate ONE GIRL AT A TIME, who all fall in love with the dude, yes. It is generic. I would love it if, for once, they DIDN'T. I enjoyed Clannad and Angel Beats a lot more because he stuck to The One.

Furthermore, time =\= attachment. If that's so, why am I not heads over heels in love with those mainstream types with hundreds of episodes? I know those types of fangirls/fanboys exist, so the correlation of what you are saying is true xD. But still, I am probably around the SAME for both Air and Kanon cast. You have the quiet one, the all-rounder one, the smart one, the loli and anything inbetween THOSE archtypes. Recent inclusion of tsundere cause I don't remember any in Air or Kanon?? There's only so many ways you can repackage the same personalities for each production. So, to sum up... I'm not attached to the characters for these, I'm attached to the plotline and what sort of magical wizardry they applied to the story this time.

Clannad Afterstory >Angel Beats > Clannad = Air > Kanon 2006.

I enjoy my mainstreams as I do the seasonal animes too. In the long run, I prefer my anime to be short and sweet, especially if it utilizes their time well. Why I'm usually in love with any anime that is noitamina <3. Granted, some of them do have a rushed ending, but not Air, at least 8D.

I'm still pretty much in love with Tatami Galaxy, having scored over 5 whole rewatches. Watashi's shitload of monologue is great and in only 11 episodes!

Dude, this is why I usually do not like galge adaptations. They tend to visit all the possible routes to satisfy their current audience minus any h-scenes unless it's the one. They usually still cover enough for any fan to slash them together (and then some more, such as extra WHAT-IF episodes in Clannad They made me TSK). In most games, don't you have to spend almost all your time and attention to one girl to achieve a happy ending? Usually pursuing all of them, like in the anime, results in an Alone ending.

The main guy, I'm almost never attracted to because he's the Mary-Sue equivelant. They all are seemingly perfect and are able to unravel any and all problems with just their time and attention. >__>;;. Seriously, if any of the girls had real "friends", they would've sorted the problem out by themselves! I've always felt the main guy's best friend has more personality than them. Let's see, between Yukito, Yuichi, Tomoya... they're not much different despite the visual differences. They're carry themselves in an aloof fashion, snarky humour and all have nothing to do but be curious about the cute girls that they bump into. They also all seem to dislike "being alive" at the beginning @ _ @. Always begin with something like "Man it's boring."

So... one boring dude and 5 eligible girls? That spells harem to me. You say he didn't fall in love with any girl besides THE ONE, but it's LAW for the ALL the girls to fall in love with him? And that's where GENERIC comes in 8D. If you can find me a harem anime that doesn't follow those guidelines, it would be the ones where the harem element is only secondary or tertiary.

I dunno about you, but sorting out one girl problem at a time just seems unrealistic and "game like". All of the girls can pause their depression until it's their turn, yes? No~~! xD I'm always more happy when they can weave stories together so they meld into something wonderful. Mainstream series have arcs, and if you can feel that lull inbetween the arcs... they're not doing it good enough. Lol, this might be the gender split. Guys tend to focus on one thing at a time, whilst girls can multitask. We can follow dual plots and subplots much more easier without resorting to calling it a "gigantic ass mess". Hell, messes are more interesting than clean, linear stories.

I certainly do hope Key spruces their formula up, because it does get stale. Angel Beats! only happened because it was a collab, so I'm guessing the Little Busters! that is coming out soonish isn't going to be "Oh wow, this is refreshing!"=A=.

That's not what seperates a generic harem from a good harem. Let's take for instance that Chocolate anime from this season. Can we all agree it's generic? Well there's about like 10+ girls and only about half are after his rooster.

Subplots are pretty much incompatible with harems. Harems are all about the interaction between the MC and the heroines. So anything standalone would distract from the plot. I feel like Key does do at least try to break from the simple arc formula. In Kanon and Clannad, every girl was introduced early on and they interacted with the main character fairly regularly until their arc came.

Plus what kind of superman could solve all the problems and take all of the emotional baggage of all the Key heroines within their games at the same time?

You clearly have not played Little Busters!. First off, you'll notice a pretty big difference as soon as you see the characters. There is more than one male friend, and dammit they are the best characters.
