Upon finishing it, I felt sorry for Kaede. Later online, I discovered the overwhelming amount of negativity directed at her character due to her alleged "yandere" status. I decided to refer to myself as a "Kaede-sympathizer" from then on out, and here's why...
I don't feel Kaede should be held responsible for her actions. For one, Rin blamed himself for not being more careful to take each girl's feelings into consideration, and I agree with him there. He is to blame. Not in full. Some of this is Kaede's fault too. She never made any real advances at him, although she mainly stayed back out of guilt and a feeling of unworthiness. But even if she never went up to him and said "I like you", you'd think at some point Rin would suspect something. Other reasoning? Temporary insanity. In Criminal Psychology class, we learned about this kind of insanity, which is a legitimate defense (even for murder), in which the accused was not sane at the exact moment that the criminal act took place. Temporary insanity is a real thing and I believe everybody is capable of it. I don't consider Kaede completely insane (sure she mistreated Rin as a little kid, but her mom died and she thought Rin was at fault. And trust me, horrible childhood events tend to make you a bit... "off", for a while) because she usually behaves like a normal person, and she was remorseful for her actions (and her later actions that followed), eventually accepting the way things were. Thus I feel Kaede is not to blame for her actions for two reasons. One being temporary insanity, making her incapable of stopping herself, and two being that her temporary insanity was not her fault.
Feel free to disagree with me. Debating this is half the thread subject. Now here's the other half:
My interest in talking about Shuffle! (and my bawwwing for Kaede's sake) was re-ignited recently by TV Tropes. During a bunch of random article browsing, I came across the Yandere page, the Shuffle! page, and the
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GirlWithPsychoWeapon page. Here's an excerpt:
"Kaede Fuyou of Shuffle! is best known (although it was originally treated as a spoiler) for snapping on her love rival, Shigure Asa, with a boxcutter."
Now hold on a second here! I know she dropped a boxcutter over Rin's face when she was a little kid, and I know she snapped at Asa, but I don't remember her snapping at Asa with a boxcutter. So I took another look at the episode where she snapped at Asa.

Not in her left hand.

Not in her right hand.
The page alleges that she snapped at Asa with a boxcutter, but I see no boxcutter here. And it's mentioned this way several times on different related pages too. According to the site, she even gained the nickname "Boxcutter Kaede" for it.
I don't know what to think. It seems to me that simply dropping a boxcutter on Rin as a little kid wouldn't be enough to earn her that nickname, so she'd need to use the boxcutter again to be referred to that way, but on the other hand, I'm looking at the second incident in question and I don't see any boxcutter. Am I missing something or was TV Tropes wrong about this?
