Umineko no Naku Koro ni

Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place in 1986 during the time frame of October the 4th and the 5th on a secluded island named Rokkenjima (六軒島 ). The head of the wealthy Ushiromiya family, Kinzō Ushiromiya, who lives on and owns Rokkenjima, is near death, and eleven of his family members arrive on the island to discuss how Kinzō's assets will be divided once he is dead. Also on the island are five of Kinzō's servants, and his personal physician. After the eleven family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island and shortly after people start to get mysteriously murdered.

Character Designs are here.

This is a sequel to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, though the characters are almost entirely new. They share some common themes, and at least in the VN you'll pick up a lot of references (and a couple of returning characters). But you won't be too confused if you missed Higurashi. Setting is pretty similar to Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None".

If I may say so, it is much better than Higurashi. Anime isn't out yet, but it's one of the better VNs translated. They call it a sound novel rather than a visual novel, which sounds silly, but is actually pretty true, the soundtrack goes a long way to setting up the atmosphere. I hope the adaptation honors the original, and the original is already translated. (cough cough go read it)

Finally. I read the announcement of its game being ported to an Anime. Personally, I never played the game (its drawings just look too funny . And even though my friend says it is very good, I just cannot get around playing it. I mean, I never look for graphics in a game, but FFS it's a visual novel, you at least expect to see nice characters to entertain you in the text ).

I will be waiting for this one.

re: Umineko no Naku Koro ni

HELL YES, AKIKO SHIKATA.

I hope they keep her song for the anime OP..... *fangirls*

And there are four different OPs to the game. So I just put my favorite. ;-;

Anyway, I've been waiting for the news of the adaptation for quite awhile. I can tell you right off the bat that it's a change from Higurashi... Less insanity, more murder-mystery. However, that doesn't change the fact that it is once again a totally enthralling story. The characters are all still fairly enjoyable, from what little I've been able to see myself. :3

We get to learn more about Frederica, who appeared at the very very end of Higurashi. Only she's a loli in this series.

(... oh yay. )

Anyway... I still think there should be an official translation for the games. (Umi AND Higu) There's such a large fanbase that I'm sure they'd turn a profit... ;-; (I can't even begin to figure out how I'm supposed to work the fan-trans ones, so don't even try to mention it. ) I wonder if there's a petition for it floating around the net....

Anime comes out next season.
You sure about this? Umineko isn't on the spring lineup. The last time I checked, the only thing we know about its air date is that it'd be in 2009. My guess is that it'll be in the fall considering the time frame of the game and the Higurashi Rei OVAs would be over by then too.

Dear god, this thread is just brimming with exactly what makes me hate the entire general "I like japanese stuff" group.

HURF DURF. Get over yourself. By 20 minutes in nobody but the people who have sticks up their arse would really care about the artwork. It's significantly better than his shittacular art in Higurashi at any rate. The game is actually a SOUND novel, not a visual novel, as the developers put it, so expecting top notch visuals is just being petty.

(Why did you show the LATEST OP THAT HAPPENS TO HAVE SPOILERS?)

Actually the more notable change is less *bleep* teenage moe moe bullshit with stereotypical female archetypes and "lol so wacky XD" comedy scenes, to far more mature leads (at least 75% of the cast is over the age of 30), who for the most part tend to be incredibly large assholes.

Relies significantly less on obscure disjointed storytelling and acting like people being murdered is something that nobody's ever *bleep*ing seen before for that matter too. The entire series is a dramatic improvement over Ryukishi07's first endeavors.

I don't even know where to start on this.

You clearly have no idea how doujin productions work, nor do you understand that the small section of the fanbase that would actually BUY the bloody thing would not cover an official translation, especially considering that these games don't turn that much money in the first place.

If you're incapable of reading a readme that explictly states "put this folder inside this folder", and following those instructions you don't DESERVE to play these games, christ.

Umineko designs are significantly more extravagant than the average PW design. Unless you just mean the presentation of the portraits which would clearly indicate you've never seen one of these before, which is also rather silly considering you have a freaking Higurashi signature.

re: Umineko no Naku Koro ni

Finally got the English translation to work. I had to tweak vista around so that the time settings were correct and try and fix the sound. =\ (It still sounds glitchy and the OP freezes up unless I skip over it. Any solutions to this? )

It's probably just my computer. I only have the file for vol. 4, so it isn't glitching against the other files...

Anyway-- There's a lot of content, just like with Higurashi, so I'm worried that once again they won't be able to portray the thoughts and feelings as accurately. Not that I blame them, there's only so much you can include without seeming pedantic, but... Still, it's much better now that I can understand more than 5% of what they're saying. XD

Though if the manga is any indication, much will be glazed over.

Simmer the hell down.

The only one coming off as a friggin' Japanese obsessed asshole is you. The fact that you'd get so riled up over simple misunderstandings or comments does nothing to aide your argument that we're the pitiful ones. It's more so wishful thinking that the novels would be translated, and I would very much like to see it happen-- That's no reason to bite my head off. So what if I'm not completely immersed in your obsessive little world?

Elitists are far worse than those who are relatively new to the trade, and are unsure of the way things work. At least the new blood can learn, and hopefully stay clear of such grotesque flaunting of superiority.

On a more disparaging note, the official release date is still unknown. A teaser was released, though it shows no animation and is just an outline of the story. Akiko Shikata's track is used, but if it is as Nath says, that's only because they haven't settled on an actual OP song yet. =_= How disappointing.

This leads me to believe the release will be sometime in mid-late fall/early winter.

I find myself liking Kinzo's character quite a bit. The way he oscillates back and forth between composed and stark raving mad (allegedly) is quite well done. But Maria's "Uu"ing will probably drive me up the wall in the animation. =\

(wasn't a fan of the Nipaas or the Hauus to begin with.)

The first arc deaths are pretty brutal. Not sure how they're going to be able to animate that without it being censored to death. Hopefully the TV stations wont pull another "This inspires teen-murderers" fiasco.

Seriously, don't expect everyone to pay attention to the soundtrack of the game if they prefer the graphics. Things just do not work that way. I just cannot believe you just said that, honestly. Normally I don't get upset by this, but you just came like a complete ignorant member that has no idea of what a 'personal opinion' is. No offense, but it is the truth.

Except that wasn't actually my problem in the first place. It was the complete idiocy that people like you tend to have. The whole thing makes me wish I didn't like any of it. I secretly hope this anime bombs so we don't get more fangirlesque morons plaguing up the fanbase.

I repeat, you were incapable of PUTTING A FOLDER INSIDE A FOLDER

A FOLDER INSIDE A FOLDER

I mean jesus, even my grandmother can do that. If you bothered reading the instructions on the wiki you'd SEE THERE'S A BUG WITH THE ONSCRIPTER BUILD IN THE LATEST PATCH FOR VISTA, and that you should use an older one.

Saying that you think there SHOULD BE isn't the same as saying "I wish". And even if there WAS an official one, what would it change anything aside from helping incapable dumbshits who apparently CAN'T FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS play it? Not to mention probably be a sub par translation in the first place if the current trend of officially translated VNs/Eroge is anything to go by.

quote
Elitists are far worse than those who are relatively new to the trade, and are unsure of the way things work. At least the new blood can learn, and hopefully stay clear of such grotesque flaunting of superiority.
This is on a entirely different scale to someone asking a valid question that is not solvable by common sense, say, asking why they were missing sound files in their installation. It's just downright brainlessness to not be able to work an installation as simple as this. The examples in this thread, although bad, are still not even touching on half of what makes the these fanbases so utterly shitty.
quote
And that makes me hate the "I hate the I Like Japanese Stuff" group.
It isn't really a group, I just happen to hate most fanbases for the most part, because of dipshits ruining everything.

quote
As far as I know, I have "no sticks up my arse" and I care about the artwork more about the sound. "Those who say that people who don't appreciate the artwork have sticks up their arse".
Have you never heard the term before? Because you just apparently interpreted it entirely incorrectly and used it wrong too.
quote
Seriously, don't expect everyone to pay attention to the soundtrack of the game if they prefer the graphics.
Cool, I'll remember that next time someone tells me they didn't like the last book they read because the cover art wasn't very detailed.
quote

Opinion's can still be *bleep*. Which is why I was criticizing it.

Oh wait, no offence meant? Nah, no way, it's cool, we're bros, right my fellow lolicon?

I am so tempted to shut this thread down and have poor Nath start over. However I decided it would behoove me to keep a record of such historical idiotic behavior for future bans.

Those who wish to discuss the title (pros and cons) in a civilized manner, feel free to do so. I strongly suggest those that have been lacking in the proper social graces learn them rapidly before my patience wears thin.
