Lighting Causes Slowdown Problems?!

I just installed Undying for the first time and have noticed the strangest problem...

Although it runs fine on minimal settings, when I turn the texture/world detail up to high, the game becomes unplayably jerky and slow (both in visuals and in sound) when there are any light sources on screen (lamps in the corridors or fires in the fireplaces for example). As long as I'm not looking at any light sources the game plays as fast as I'd expect it to, but looking at them makes it crawl.

I'm running Windows 98 SE on a Athlon 1.8 GHz processor, with a GeForce 4 Ti card and 512 MB RAM.

Any idea why this would happen? It's really strange and has so far meant that I could enjoy this game...
