really silly newbie question

Hi
I just installed this game. It looks hugely complex, but I'm willing to spend the time to figure it out.
However, before I make that investment, I have a question regarding combat. What combat? It doesn't appear to be turn-based, but by the time I even remember which character has which ability/spell/weap and what button to click, those goblins have already landed 50 blows. Also, in a thick melee, I can't even tell which characters are mine and what flailing arms and weapons belong to NPCs.

What am I missing? What's the point of having all these spells if you need a dictionary to look them up - it'll be a long while before I've remembered them all.
Ergo, I must be missing something important here

re: really silly newbie question

Hey, Shine!

Indeed, the game is hard, like Baldur's Gate II, and complex, like Baldur's Gate II, especially if you don't know much about AD&D. However, the best thing to remember about combat in these games is the handy dandy pause button, also known as spacebar. I recommend pausing after each action, or you'll never get through the game. At least, not without horrendous difficulty.

Hope to see you around!
