B:AA Preview/Review Thread (New: IGN on Page 4)
|
It comes from GamesMaster Magazine, which is a popular mag over in the UK (highest selling gaming one, I believe).
They gave Arkham Asylum a 96/100. Here are some quotes:
quoteBat'll do very nicely - this is the greatest game of 2009 so far! quoteSeveral gameplay styles are deftly weaved seamlessly into the plot. quoteGraphics - The attention to detail is almost unparalleled 92% Gameplay - Breathtakingly good 96% Lifespan - 12 hours at full speed 91% Oh and here are images of the review:
Image Image Image Image Image Image
And really, the only complaint they had about the game was that the final battle could have been more "inventive".

I read the story about Eidos "fixing" the reviews a while back, and wondered the same thing when I read the review in the first post...truth is I don't care. I have played the demo at my local gamestop, and even though it's just a tiny portion of the game, everything in the review above is spot on, from what I've seen. The gameplay and graphics in the demo are amazing. I'm quite confident that this will be one of the best games of the year, regardless of whether Eidos bribes the reviewers or not. Come on! Every trailer and screenshot for this game so far has been AMAZING!

I basically feel the same way as m2caldwell. Whether Eidos has bribbed magazines or not doesn't change the fact that this game is a must-buy for me and it will probably turn out to be one of the better games of the year. The allegations could be true, but they could also be false. We know about Eidos and their shady history, but right now, nothing has been proven. Either way; The game will sell copies, and I sure as hell am going to enjoy playing through it. quote Wolfenstein38

I noticed the dummy as well and figured he was Scarface. Although, does that also mean we will be getting the Ventriloquist? I certainly hope so, as one just isn't the same without the other.[/size]

This looks alot like the thread you posted in the GoW2 forum. Remember how that turned out?
I haven't read the review yet, but nice to see it getting a positive reception. Also 12 hours is pretty cool. Perfect length for a videogame like this.

I like to think that Eidos aren't stupid enough to fix the review scores for another game (since the backlash they recieved from gamers last time they tried it), but the sad thing is that these sorts of rumors will leave some people doubting whether or not the game is worth buying. And that's a shame. Especially considering the game looks like it will live up to the hype.
I'm geting the game anyway. It looks spiffy. And yay for 12 hour playtime.

According to the review, you finish the game in 12 hours AT FULL SPEED, which to me indicates that if you're searching around Arkham Island and looking for the many different collectibles, your playtime will run up atleast a few more hours. Personally, I'm expecting my first playthrough to run around 16 hours. That's what I've been hearing from others who have played the game too.quote Subzer0

The bold above I entirely agree with. I've played a sort demo trial of the challenge mode where batman fights a bunch of thugs, and each round more thugs comes, and I have to say the combat is absolutely awesome. I was looking forward to this before but when I played the demo at May 15 at a gamestop the combat is just so awesome. The counter is incredibly added in, and the best part is it's an old demo. The actual game could be miles ahead of that. I was sold on the game when I played the demo, and I couldn't give a rats ass about what Edios is doing.
I'm a huge batman fan, this game is FOR THE FANS. As far as I see this, if you wasn't sold on getting this before, then you're not going to get it regardless. This game is easily 9.5/10 for me. So the score is perfect.
In fact I already pre-ordered it.

And so, the controversy begins... First Batman:Arkham Asylum Review Under QuestionPersonally, I think this is much ado about nothing. What would it benefit any reviewer to present a false or misleading review of the game? So what if they get to be the first reviewer? If they misrepresent the game, there's nothing to be gained by it as their credibility would be shot. If this game comes out and it sucks, everyone will know that the reviews were biased, so it's just not worth it for a reviewer to mislead people. Personally, I will be playing this game no matter what the reviews say.

I agree with m2caldwell. When Eidos messed with reviews in the past they only got to a small percentage of reviewers, so the scores still averaged out and showed how good/bad the games truly were. It just seems so pointless for Eidos to try it again with B:AA when it hasn't worked in the past. In the end, all they're doing is making the game look bad and putting people off buying it.
I'll still end up getting the game - I'm not going to let Eidos prevent me from enjoying a game that I want, but it's sad to know that these rumors (whether they're true or not) will put some people off from buying it.

Before now i couldn't really imagine the score from GM getting much lower tbh. Its a blessing to the game and a pleasant reminder.

I liked the Gamesradar preview. Shame about the Bane battle, but apart from that the game sounds frickin' fun.

The magazine doesn't come out until tomorrow (I believe), but Official Playstation Magazine UK has reviewed the game. Here are some tidbits:
quoteOverall score: 9/10
Pros: Fighting gameplay is very easy to use but deeply satisfying and really responsive. Theres a trophy for flowing together 40 consecutive strikes). A terrific sense of care to DC's heritage - rivals Bioshock in terms of depth and detail. Riddler's puzzles are brilliant and add depth and longevity to the game in an unforced way.
Cons: Batclaw mightly be slightly overpowered, and along with the Detective Vision they seem 'almost too easy to use'. The convenient placing of the gargoyle statues stretches believability to breaking point.
Overall - "Basically, the whole game is a class act. the fighting is sophisticated but acade-addictive, the visuals are stylish, and the Lara-like exploration is smartly done. Plus the Dc heritage feels all-encompassing like a big blanket. Akham Asylum is comfortably the best comic book game that PlayStation's ever had, and is up there with the system's best actioners, full stop."
Another very positive review. quote Miss Razz
Shame about the Bane battle Agreed. Since Bane is my second favorite character in the Batman universe, I was hoping they'd give him special treatment. In the sense that we'd encounter Bane and after a brief skirmish where he hands Batman his ass, Bane then tracks Batman through a little part of the Island using his own superb detective skills.
It seems as if the Bane battle sorta just depicts him as the mindless brute I've come to know and hate.
