Which CPU ?

First off im new to the forums, so Hi

Im thinking about building my own computer. Im generally planning to use it for internet browsing, abit of video editing and gaming. I thought that i should start with the processors and go on from there.
I have no idea what processor i should get, which is why im here.
I dont know whether to go for Intel or AMD, quad core or something like an i5 or i7. I would prefer not to spend more than around £700 (on everything) which may be a problem.
Anyway, what do you think ?

Try to keep it relatively simple because im pretty much a novice when it come to computers

Thanks

re: Which CPU ?

Intel has the power for what you want but it comes at a price, they have always been on the pricey side compared to AMD.

AMD can also do what you are seeking at a cheaper price, they have always been a whole lot cheaper then Intel.

so it comes down to those two names Intel or AMD, you can still get last generation CPUs for cheap like the Intel C2Q (core 2 quad) or the AMD Phenom X4.

unless you plan to drop $2,000 on a new machine then you should go top of the line Intel Core i7 easily $560 for a CPU lol

re: Which CPU ?

Would that AMD one be good for quite a few years ?
If so then that seems great for me

or should i spend abit more and go for this one:
Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz

And what about this one ?
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400

re: Which CPU ?

well how many years do you plan to keep this computer? if you had 1K pounds, then you could get yourself a setup that would last ages. AMD 965 3.4 Ghz, 4 GB DDR3 1600 mhz RAM, 2x HD 4890 video cards in Crossfire, 500 GB HDD, and a 700 watt PSU.

That setup sounds great and if it would last ages even better!. I cant really afford to spend over £700
I haven't really got a plan for how long. I would just like to make sure that i choose the right one which is good and will last as long as possible. With my tight budget of £700 i would prefer it to cost under £150.

Also what about this processor ?
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz 6M Cache S775 1333MHZ
http://www.dabs.com/products/intel-core-2-duo-e8400-3-00ghz-6m-cache-s775-1333mhz-4YCZ.html?refs=

Would it be better to go for a high end duel core?, also its only £122.

Its so hard to choose, there is so many!!!

re: Which CPU ?

well in that case, you can just get one 4890, and swap the 965 to a 955 or 940, and it will get you under budget. it ought to last for 4 to 5 years with decent gaming settings.

Sounds great! il look into it. Im just thinking about how i can do it aswell. It would be my first time
Im not sure if i could do it because i dont know much about the parts let alone how to build one. Although it would be really helpful for me because i have only recently started an IT System Support course at college.

Thanks for you help

I don't know the individual prices, i have to choose a sound card, i dont have much of a choose when it comes to other makes or the psu and i have to choose one of 2 processors and they are both core 2.

Doesnt matter, i wont get that one.
I would much rather build my own. I would learn alot (which i need to do for my college course), be able to choose what i want and what makes they are.

Huge thanks for your help. Il look up the parts you suggested and get some prices
...well, il look them up tomorrow.
