Dual Core Atom: Intel D945GCLF2 & Atom 330 Review
|
Good day, Bill reviewed the Atom 330 today (a super-lower power, powerful, little itty bitty zippy zappy motherboard'n'CPU. ) http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/D945GCLF2_atom_330/

Indeed 1080p and a C7 comparison would have been cool. or just using other low power comparisons.
I'm sure a lot of people are still running mobile chips in their systems to scrape by with performance and lower power compared to full on desktop parts. I have a 35w mobile 2500+ xp running -.150v on a media center right now as an example.
From what I hear though the Atom is a good performer if you don't plan to do a lot, the demonstrations seemed to highlight that quite a bit, it would be interesting to see how it would have all panned out had it been out of order execution instead.

One thing I found is they could have found a quieter fan for it. I ended up taking the stock one off and mounting a slow spinning 120mm fan right above the old one whole computer runs much colder since moves over 10 times the air and is almost zero noise

You missed the point on this review. No one cares that it runs some game at 6 FPS, or how many whetstone operations it can do. We care about whether it can play HD content in XBMC running in linux. We care about whether it can decode blue-ray content. That is what this board is going to be used for in 85 % of the cases and the fact that intel left off an HDMI port seems to say it won't be able to and that Intel has missed the mark completely. Please run some more tests and let us know.

ChrisQ, I see where you are coming from. This must be a popular choice among the Linux builders. I'm sure, if anyone on these forums has this board, your questions will be answered soon. Seems like a good board, but you may want it for HD XBMC.
Be calm, be polite, be enlightened.

Ive got one of the D945GCLF2 / Atom 330 boards. HD playback in XP using CoreAVC & MPC-HC works brilliantly (Screen resolution is 1280x1024 at the moment, so its not full HD), but Im playing a 1080p Sample of Transformers. Tried using XBMC but its horrible and drops frames left, right & center. Apparently it'd be better using the newer ffmpeg builds which better support dual-core CPU's etc, but Im not sure, havent looked into it enough. Was Googl'ing for answers hoping somebody else had when I found this thread. Have yet to try the XBMC LiveCD to see how it goes, will do soon-ish

Just put the windows 7 beta on this board and after using xp for the last 7 years and I have to say that even for a beta this os feels real nice. Install took about 15 minutes and there was no need to install any drivers, at least not the 4 intel gives you with the board. I installed on my 2nd 640 GB sata and it installed a MBR that appearently scrubbed my grub menu as on reboot it offered me only xp and 7 from 7's menu. Ubuntu was still there but no way to boot to it. when I'm done fiddling with 7 beta I'll try and reinstall the grub again. Anyway, xp runs a lil faster than Ubuntu, and this beta build of Vista 2 or windows 7(call it what you will) seems to be a lil faster than xp. Have only had one program that wouldn't install right and it was an old dvd ripping program i bought at wal-mart 5 years ago for $3.95usd. Other than that everything seems to work correctly but its hard to tell since I've never used Vista, so only comparing to xp. Theoretically, you could pull a D945GCLF2 out of the box and other than case assembly, you could be up and running in about 20-25 minutes

I have one of these boards running OS X 10.5.5, Windoze XP Pro and Ubuntu Linux (running Compiz-Fusion)
I have to say this board is a cracker for the cash, overall I liked your review but trying it to run various games, its not what this board is about. I agree if they had used a better chipset the power requirements would have even been better, but for me using an older GPU has meant most of the os's work with it right out of the box.

I have one of these boards running OS X 10.5.5, Windoze XP Pro and Ubuntu Linux (running Compiz-Fusion) I did a Google search for multi-booting this particular motherboard with OS X, Windows XP and Windows 7 and this thread came up. Not really getting much in the way of "how-to" results so I was just wondering if you might be able to point me to instructions on how I might be able to accomplish the above. Thanks!

Has anyone used this board with a PCI graphics card? Bought a Sapphire 9250 128MB PCI card and configured the bios for external PCI graphics and also Auto. In both cases the card is seen and used during initial boot, continues to be used during initial Windows XP Professional startup, then the screen goes blank - though the monitor LED indicates that it is receiving a signal (green). If I transfer the vga plug to the onboard connector the monitor is working correctly and the PC has finished starting WIndows. I've checked in control panel and the drivers appear to have been installed correctly. Can anyone help me here please - I don't know where to go next. Thanks Mike Sorry for any time wasted by anyone - found the problem. I didn't realise that not only did I have to play with the bios setting but also disable the onboard graphics from within Windows control panel. Mike Edit: Jan 21, 09
