need a good processor

I need some kind of processor with good capabilites and it has to be around 3.5 GHz... any suggestions? also, it cant be too expensive, probably less than $200.

re: need a good processor

If you're serious about it, your best shot is probably a Q6600 if you can find one on sale for sub $200 and then get a decent mobo to overclock it up that high.

Just wondering why it's over 3.5GHz that you need? I mean regular cpu's haven't gone 3.5 or higher in ages, since pretty much the old P4 architecture.

re: need a good processor

are you sure it says you need a 3.5ghz processor? they dont even make processors that fast any more. Your best bet would be to get a core 2 duo thats in your budget, and get a good decent motherboard. since I dont know what the rest of your system is, I cant tell you what kind of upgrades you should get.

re: need a good processor

Sorry man, takes me a bit to reply some weeks. ^^:

Just visited the ubi store for the reqs for R^V2

quote
Supported OS: Windows® XP/Windows Vista® (only)
Processor: 3 GHz Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon™ 3000 (3.5 GHz Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon™ 3500 recommended)
RAM: 1 GB
Video Card: 128 MB DirectX® -compliant, Shader 3.0-enabled video card (256 MB recommended)(see supported list*)
Sound Card: DirectX-compliant sound card
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (included on disc)
DVD-ROM: 4x DVD-ROM
Hard Drive Space: 7 GB
Peripherals Supported: Windows-compliant keyboard and mouse, Xbox 360® Controller for Windows
Multiplay: Broadband connection with 128 kbps upstream or faster

*Supported Video Cards at Time of Release
ATI® RADEON® X1600-1950/HD 2000/3000 series
NVIDIA GeForce® 6600-6800/7/8 series
The kicker was that they said P4. The Pentium 4 is a really old processor style, using a 31stage pipeline it kinda relied on high speeds to stay competitive. As such it's no biggie if you use a Core 2 Duo because it smokes the life out of the P4 even on a bad day since you get two cores and around a 12 stage pipeline as well as a slew of other improvements.

I guess we'd just need info on what you have instead and we can tell you if you're good to run it or what you could step up to without breaking the bank.

re: need a good processor

I just got a Xeon E3110, it's a deal price of $215, you can give it a look

http://www.dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=96617&ru=290

I'd say it is the same processor as the LGA775 socket E8400. Overclocked and stable at 3.75GHz. Have run SETI for 3 days 24/7 with no stability issues. Zalman cooler is probably overkill.

re: need a good processor

I dont think i have a good enough pc for it to work. i guess its a LGA775 socket and the system board is an Intel 4-layer; BTX-compatible board based on the Intel 945G Express chipset. i just copied that off of dell from the info i got there, because most of my pc is stock. will i have to upgrade more than my processor? all that stuff seems pretty old. maybe the processor learningpig mentioned is compatible. it seems to have the same socket type.

re: need a good processor

The LGA775 wont work in your system pretty much at all.

I'd check and see if you can find a KB article about your system to make sure you can run a higher end chip in there. Sometimes companies like Dell would cap the multiplier to prevent people from running chips that cut into their potential profits.

http://www.starmicro.net/detail.aspx?ID=543

They have a P4 3.4GHz for $166. I don't see any 3.5's but those might have been the Extreme Edition chips. =/

The 3.2 is $79 but I doubt you'd be able to overclock it on an OEM board.

http://www.starmicro.net/detail.aspx?ID=122

That's pretty much all I could find for Socket 478 chips that didn't turn up costing $250+

re: need a good processor

so are the LGA775 and the socket 478 different, or the same, because I said my system did have the LGA775 socket. or maybe that is just what its called on the processor... sorry , im sorta new in this area...

re: need a good processor

If you run CPU-Z or Everest Free Edition you'll be able to confirm what you have without further checking.

If you're running an OEM board you'll probably have to consider keeping within the series (Pentium / Core series) since the BIOS can be iffy about what it wants to support such as a Xeon processor.

re: need a good processor

In regular boards you can cross up Xeon and Core 2 chips quite a bit. In OEM boards they often try to limit your options so that you don't buy a bottom end cpu system and then install a new CPU for very little and have a heavy competition form with their high end market.

If you can post the everest results that'd be great since I'd be able to dig up what I can for you.
