That's exactly my point; the forum doesn't look very good, it doesn't have much activity because it didn't have a mod. Since PL has stepped up to the plate more people have come in, and some discussion about educating others actually took place, but now that this has been created that'll quickly stop and the forum'll likely lose a lot of its traffic again.

This forum is a reality, so there is no point in continuing to debate the issue.

Many forums have limited or even seasonal activity. That doesn't mean they don't serve a purpose.

If members fear that the Education Forum and its sub-forum won't have enough traffic, then advertise them in your signatures.

There are enough threads that belong here turning up in other forums to make Homework & Tutoring more than successful.

Oh, I'm not saying this forum won't be busy, quite the opposite. I was just pointing out how it seems to steal quite a bit of traffic from the already existing Education forum. But, as Keiichi said, they're obviously not going to ditch this now, so I guess there is no real point in debating it anyway.

Aye, I expect traffic will pick up both when school starts over there and when the word gets out. There's obviously still plenty of people at school atm down here though.

At least at this stage, I'd prefer threads to be question-specific rather than topic-specific. Topic-specific threads run the same dangers that the old homework help threads have - if we have too many people asking too many different questions in the same thread, responses addressing specific questions will be severely hampered.

If you're having trouble with algebra in general, you could make a thread asking for explanations of the basic priniciples. If it's a particular rule or set of questions you're having trouble with, you could make a thread for those especially.

To be fair, it wasn't completely clear what sort of response he wanted. The statement he was asking about could be explained by someone with a decent understanding of English and literary devices without ever having read the book. It wasn't until he explicitly said that he was having trouble with how the statement applies to Catcher in the Rye that that criterion became necessary.

When the rules say that we're not here to do your homework for you, there's a fair distance between posts such as the one you gave and actually answering the question in an essay format (or otherwise a format that you would give as an answer to such a question). I don't have a problem with what you said, or a couple of general sentences to get someone started, but then again the question might not have been an essay topic either. Perhaps it was just a homework question, and you did actually provide an answer that he's going to give word for word?

These things are obviously impossible to determine. I'm more on the lenient side of a blurred line, so no, you don't have to think that you're limited to explaining what the statement means. In general.

People ask a question...you help them. No need to sign up as a tutor, if they see you as a reliable source they may begin to contact you via PM in the future.

Maybe a list, similar to this would be useful though for quick pms. I see threads as more accessible and open to correction in case something went wrong.
