How to acquire and attack pursuers in Blenheim tutorial?

I can't make heads or tails of this. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions or explanations.

In the suggested view (1 o'clock low), I see in the center of the screen just above the fuselage what appears to be the gunsight, and I am constantly instructed to bank left. But, heeding maneuver instructions or not, I never can acquire the pursuer in the gunsight. In fact, I rarely see the pursuer at all! Also it seems rarely if at all will the guns fire (button R1). Nothing seems to happen. Then, next thing I know, the instructor is congratulating me on a successful mission, and I've passed!

When I depart from the instructions and use what I would call the default view (6 o'clock level), of course I see the gunsight where expected and I occasionally see the pursuers as they overtake me. The guns fire on-demand (button R1). But I still can't acquire the pursuers in the gunsight no matter how I maneuver. And, again, next thing I know, the instructor congratulates me on a successful mission, and I pass!
