I once talked to Krunal about this, and I think it is important!

When you try to upload an image, I suggest that there should appear a message saying: Please use proper image naming!

There are some beautiful images, but their names are 98420948029482 or sjdfhndjsfhds...it's not very "elegant" to see such names in the editing section or in the image listing place.


I know for example...I uploaded an image for Agrias. I called it Agrias. A second person uploads another image for Agrias - just call it Agrias2 or something...not 39058349583495

So..what about it?

That's not really a suggestion that can be implemented, more like feedback. I think we should be able to change the names of images or delete them, as sometimes images are uploaded with bad names or they aren't relevant or good quality, and I want to replace them or rename them in the most organized fashion possible.

Your right, it's not a Suggestion or a Feedback, it's something that SHOULD be done. I've changed the name of the thread to reflect that this really is a Best Practice, that I would like to see. If you've added an image like that and would like to replace it, then please send myself or Avalith a PM and we'll remove it for you (you should reupload it yourself however).

Renaming images on MediaWiki isn't possible. I've already talked to tekmosis about this, and the only solution is to delete and add the new one. As such if you add the new one and link me to the old one, I'll be happy to delete it.

Definitely a best practice. Try to do more than calling an image by a single word name however - use very descriptive filenames! If the image is an image of Mario and Luigi in race karts, then call it something like "mario_and_luigi_karts.jpg". If you just name it "mario.jpg" or "karts.jpg" then sure enough it will prevent someone who wants to literally upload a picture of just mario, or just the karts.

Also, the more descriptive the filename the more logic the file will have to users editing a page. It's really tough to remember what you're looking at when the code has a bunch of [[Image:123151231231.jpg]] style codes.

But isn't it REALLY possible to re-name the images?

It's very much possible to rename them on your own PC. However, once uploaded to the wiki, you cannot rename it like pages. It's really unfortunate that you cannot MediaWiki 1.13 will be coming out soon (I believe) so we'll have to see what new changes they introduce (and how easy it'll be for me to upgrade us from 1.12 to 1.13).

Glad to hear...There are a lot of images that need renaming...some uploaded by myself I confess. Sorry.

I can delete images and upload them again at FF and RE wiki. I'm glad I only uploaded images there!

Yes definatly something that needs implemented. When linking to an image in a page its easier to remember TVXcreate.jpg than 7437836gh8.jpg without a piece of paper handy.
