[ Best Practice ] Categories & Sub-Categories

Hi All,
It seems many have started adding various pages, but apart from a select few, not many people have started to take advantage of the Wiki's biggest ability - Categories.

What Are Categories

Why Add Categories

Clicking on 'Categories' gives you a list of all the Categories on the Wiki. Clicking on 'Stargate SG-1' gives you a list of all things Stargate SG1 currently added to the Wiki, and the same is true for Stargate Atlantis, and the Characters is essentially a list of Characters. Each of these is done Alphabetically which makes it much easier to navigate. The best thing is that, you can then refer to this page as an 'index' for all the Characters, or in the case of the Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis page, as an 'index' of all things SG1/Atlantis respectively.

How Do I Add Categories

Simply add [[Category:Category Name]] anywhere in the page (preferably the top, for easier editing) and it will essentially add that page to the appropriate category.

You can add multiple categories by simply writing them one after the other like so:

    [[Category:Category Name 1]][[Category:Category Name 2]][[Category:Category Name 3]]

So for the page I linked to before, the code is:

    [[Category:Stargate SG-1]][[Category:Stargate Atlantis]][[Category:Characters]]

    Sweet and simple.

How Do I Link To Categories

Linking to them is just as simple, simply add a colon before the word 'Category' like so:

    [[:Category:Category Name|Link Name]]

If you don't add the Link name, it will simply use Category:Category Name as the link name, and I'm sure you don't want the word 'category' when linking.

How To Add A Sub-Category

Sub Categories can be quite beneficial, and for an example of one, you don't need to go further than this page.

As you can see that page has a couple of 'Sub-cats' namely the Bestiary for FFXII and the Characters page. You can see that as the main index for the game, it can be very beneficial and is essentially a way of filtering content to say 'just characters'.

Adding sub categories, is pretty much the same as adding Categories, all you need to do is add the MAIN category as a Category to the Category that you want to be a Sub Category (confusing right? let me give you an example)...

I want Bestiary (FFXII) to be a Sub Category for Final Fantasy XII, so all I need to do is add [[Category:Final Fantasy XII]] to the Bestiary (FFXII) Category. This will add the Bestiary Cat as a sub-cat to FFXII. Easy as that.
So can EVERYONE please start to do this on pages from now on. If your creating a page for Final Fantasy XII Espers, please put [[Category:Final Fantasy XII]] in the title, so we have an index of all things FFXII...

Please ask any questions about this feature below.

    Hot damn.

I was wondering how to do this actually. That's really helpful indeed. I'mma start tagging pages with that now that I'm starting up work on the Dragon Ball wiki. Thanks for the head's up, Krunal. :3

When I began doing these, I noticed their organizational efficiency, nice one there Krunal.

Just to clarify, when creating pages for a game Wiki, we just add the category as the name of the game(s) of the series it belongs to?

re: [ Best Practice ] Categories & Sub-Categories

Depends on the wiki itself. For the FE Wiki, I'll use Zephiel as an example. He's a character who appears in both FE6 and FE7, and is from the country of Bern.

So, I put:
[[Category: Characters]]
[[Category: Bern]]
[[Category: Fire Emblem 6]]
[[Category: Fire Emblem 7]]

This is just an example, so use whatever format the wiki you're editing uses.

I think that's a superb list of categories and would make for excellent organization. I definitely think that we should do something like this:
  • a category for the "type" of content
    • eg Characters, Weapons, Instances (for MMOs), Bosses, Legends (that's what they have in the Smackdown wiki, which is an excellent idea), NPC, Cars, etc
  • a category to tie together subgroups of content. In GhostMember's situation he used Bern. I think that's a great way to group things together. The town of Bern's entry would also belong to that category.
What I'm not so sure about, but which I think will work well too, is to include a category for each specific game in the series. However, I also believe that we should start making mini-game-Header templates that contain a simple link back to the main game surrounded by a box.

You know, it is possible to do 'Sub Categories' Too.

Click.

Dynasty Warriors, when finished, will be a huge list of categories, trust me.

I've done something similar for the FFXII Wiki, thanks to Sparx... I'll also be updating the above to tell people how to add 'Sub-Categories'. I'd do it now but I'm at work, and I don't have NAM

I made a category (which I put a lot of work into), but a staff member (Deathscythe) deleted it. It had important game components (Viruses, in MegaMan), and I was going to add more information when I got back from being away.

Uh... Deathsythe isn't a staff member of Megaman. The only way it would have been deleted by him is if you put it on a wiki he's on instead of Megaman.

Hi All, can you please all take a look at the 'Sub Categories' addition that I have now added to the above guide. If the links don't work, please send me a PM, at work, so unfortunately, can't check to see if the links work, have to simply remember the links from memory...

I'll be adding 'Sorting Categories' eventually to the above (when I get around to doing it on the FF Wiki)

Oh...I added to some Final Fantasy wiki, and I was wondering if I should really add them to ALL.

I also added to Resident Evil Outbreak in Resident Evil wiki, in which I could use some HELP.
