What the Prototype Demo showed PC Gamer Magazine

quote
The Goal
So far the Sims has been a command simulator where Sims will do what you command them to do. Take the toilet. Their needs and their desperation quotes tells you to tell this sim to go to the toilet. Rod Humble explained that they want to turn what they call a toilet sim into a modern roleplaying game where your constantly faced with interesting choicesand the opportunity to play what if.

"Its time to break the barriers aswell" he said. Let sims wander through town, visit neighbours at their houses, go to work, and piss themselves in the gym. PC Gamers quote was "GTA:Pleasantville".

The Demo: What they saw
A Single character is centred on and then the camera moves out to reveal a big neighbourhood.Townies and Sims walk by some shopping, others chatting and cars whizz pass on the roads. Forget lots! This is a place where stuff happens and the outcome can be just about anything.

The Demo: Exploring the Features with SimMatt
Matt is a chef. He lives on a hill that looks over a Pleasantville town. He is still a young adult, has a hot wife and a flatscreen TV. But today his wife is in a bad mood and Matt wants a promotion.

Its morning and time for work. In The Sims 2 we would tell him to get up, refresh himself, get showered and have breakfast before the car pool arrives.
This time he tells us what he needs to do and we respond by clicking the bubble. Thats the morning taken care of. Now getting top work... well no carpool this time. We jog down to town with him where he will arrive at work and meet his boss for tasks. In this case the dishwasher is broken at work and the repairman can't get there in time before opening time. They need clean dishes and Matt accepts the task of taking them home to clean them and then bringing them back on time. This is the kind of thing that could bernefit Matt's promotion.

The point is the job exists in the neighbourhood. Not in some silly stasis portal that your sim drove to everyday in The Sims 2. On a normal day Matt would drive to work (Except the code was off because it currently has bugs in it!) and do some cooking, growing or fishing.

The Demo: Matts Wife explains mood changing
Now how to make his wife feel better? Well in The Sims 2 you would normally improve her needs. But this time it will take a little more than some TV, Toilet, Shower, Sleep and Food to make her feel better.

Mat wants to impress her with a Valentines meal. She loves Spaghetti Bolognaise. He could buy it frozen from the shop but that will never impress her. He would do better going to the Greengrocers or Havesting the ingrediants fresh.

So it looks like goodbye to our fridge full of meal tickets and time to start shopping for real food whether you are lazy to get frozen or instant meals or you are bothered to cook healthy fresh meals.

What else affects the mood? Well a number of things will be the case. Maybe your sim doesn't like being fat, wetting themselves. They may feel sad for a while because their lover has died and feel happy because they are pregnant. Whatever their personality, their mood will react to the events. Forget about aspiration points. We're talking about emotional reactions.

Expansions
Rod says there is no doubt about there being expansions but like the game there are thing the team want to do differently. Take Nightlife. Downtown was paused while you were at home on the Home neighbourhood and vice versa. If you owned a coffee shop in open for business and went on holiday in Bon Voyage the shop is abandoned.
Ther open world nature of The Sims 3 gives Rod inspiration to expand on it but we don't want to go down such roads where areas will pause again. For the moment we'll keep an eye out for more news on
The Sims 3

The Sims themselves
Without the pictures from the magazine I can't explain it accurately but don't be fooled by what you see on screenshots and videos. The graphics are slightly improved and the sims are more realistic than the Sims 2 in appearances. And a great example were fat sims. Forget eggs in the tummy we are talking chubby cheeks, chubby torso, chubby arms, chubby legs and not forgetting chubby feet.
I re-wrote this from the article in the magazine to express the facts that were mentioned. The magazine is one of a few to have a world exclusive preview and has more infomation than most websites.

As for my comments I love the idea that a job is part of the neighbourhood. It makes the simulator more complete for me. So does such features as having to shop for specific items to cook a meal from lazy microwave meals to sunday roasts and oriental cooking.

It's a shame that not alot could be revealed about cars because of bugs in the code. It leaves me wondering how it will be different from cars in The Sims 2.

I think that cars will not be a lot different. I think that it would be a "click on the car and choose where you want to go" feature on the car. That's all. I doubt there would be manual or direct control, because there is none of that in the Sims.

No it has been hinted that they are working on some sort of car control which is why they are having problems. Its probably that feature from Simcity 4 Rushour. Oh I hope we can build roads in this one!

You know something I don't think I even like that game now it looks so boring. I think I may have missed an issue of the sims 3 but I don;t care. but is it still out so I can look at the other games. the reason why I think it is boring because you have to create sims from scratch and draw your own objects which I cannot even draw at all and their are no sims from the old gae by the way.

Drawing from scratch is optional. All the catalog stuff and basic sim building will still be there!
