No hype for Fatal Frame IV ... "Wii owners don't want to play M Rated games"
|
Well we definitely need more discussion in this forum, and I thought this one brought up some interesting points about FFIV. It also has some points about Nintendo's other M-Rated games and survival-horror games. Could they ever really be a success on Nintendo's "family friendly" console? quoteNo hype for Fatal Frame IV ... "Wii owners don't want to play M Rated games"quoteFatal Frame 4 was announced at the beginning of 2008 and since then there has been little news on the newest installment in the popular survival horror. The game is being released this Summer and fans are beginning to get worried with the limited information that has been released. Visit any Fatal Frame 4 discussion board and you will be met with few posts and even fewer people who know the game exists. This is a noticeable contrast to the thriving discussion boards of other survival horror games such as Resident Evil 5 and Silent Hill: Homecoming. [Mere months before the game's release and important details such as the protagonist's name have not even been revealed!] Fatal Frame 4 will be the third game published by Nintendo to receive an M rating and perhaps this is the problem. Wii owners are not interested in buying mature games and Nintendo, despite being the publishers, aren't keen on marketing an M rated violent horror game to an audience who trusts them to create family friendly games for parents and their children. [FF4 boasts some of the most impressive graphics seen on the Wii console yet.] It would not the first time one of Nintendo's promising M rated horror games has gone unnoticed. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, another survival horror published by Nintendo, resulted in poor sales due to Nintendo's mediocre marketing. Despite the game recieving positive reviews and averaging a 92% on Metacritic, it failed to sell well. In 2006 Denis Dyack, designer of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, confirmed that a sequel will be made if his team is allowed to. However, as Nintendo owns all rights to the game, a sequel would be Nintendo's decision. Two years have passed since Dydack's statement and Nintendo have still yet to announce a sequel. [With Tecmo's obvious effort to push the Wii's capabilities it would be a tragedy for the company if FF4 flopped.] Could Fatal Frame 4 suffer same fate? Is Nintendo not trying hard enough to produce hype and attract an audience interested in survival horrors? Or are people simple not interested in it? Considering Fatal Frame's unusual themes, unique gameplay and morbid storytelling it seems impossible that so few people are familiar with such a series. It's up to Nintendo to change this but they are running out of time with the release date drawing near. - source Mod Edit: May 03, 08 by Gothic Girl

Another reason why i think it should be multiplatform. Not alot of Wii Owners even know about FF anyway, the PS fans do, which is why it needs to be on all consoles. I bet you its not going to get much sales. I have a feeling its going to get as much sales as Crysis.

It'd be better if it was opened to be on all platforms. I mean putting it on the Wii won't sell much due to most people on the Wii wanting to play games which aren't horrors honestly.

Also the only reason why RE got money was because people know about that series. Not alot knew about Fatal Frame at least on the Wii owners side.

this game sounds good, but pretty much 50% of wii owners are kids. if nintendo had aimed for a higher age group, this game would be more popular.

even if this game came out for ps2 an xbox, the nintendo fans know how good this game is and are waiting for it. The sales are not going to be that bad. The wii is selling really good, that's why a lot of games from another consoles are coming to the wii, but yeah I have to admit that around 40% are pokemon freaks and n00bs.

Four words, guys. Four. Words.
Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem
Do you know how GOOD that game was? It was amazing. However, it was Gamecube exclusive. A good, scary, mindscrew, and COMPLETELY wasted on the console's audience. It experienced no commercial success at all, and is widely known as 'one of the most underrated gaming experiences ever'.
Now, I love Nintendo - my Nintendo DS gets more play than my PS2, lemme tell ya - but they've always been more about -recruiting- casual gamers, as well as pandering to the ones they already have. They're not interested in pleasing serious gamers, unless it's as a part of a Zelda or Mario franchise (and sometimes not even then; look at all those spin offs) ZERO IV is gonna get ignored. It's going to be a huge success critically, because of Suda51. It's going to make no money at all. And serves them right. What were they thinking, buying a mature survival horror series? I feel pretty strongly about this as I'm sure you can guess. :B

Didn't they say this same thing about the Nintendo GameCube? Then look what came out for it and was a HUGE success. Resident Evil 4 AND Eternal Darkness. 2 of the best M rated games on the GC.
It may seem like a family console now, but just wait till the price drops and even people in my financial situation can afford it. More M and T rated games will come out for it. Probably not MANY, but a good amount. Even the cuddly little white box is not safe from mature content!!! AHAHAHA!

I don't think it should be discounted from the Wii because their is undoubtedly teenage and adult Wii owners who will want to play it, even if the wii has a lighter image atm. However i do still think it should be multi platform, seeing as the previous games have been on different consoles and therefore have a lot of fans who may not be able to get this installment.

Sweetheart I have to confess.♥

Read the post above. Eternal Darkness was a fantastic game. This didn't save it from doing terribly in terms of sales, because barely anyone bought it. Resi only did well because it has a RABID, insanely huge fanbase (which ZERO does not have); it is also more commercial because of the movies and the gore, and besides, Resi was multiplatform.
