Will Fatal Frame IV start a "mature games" trend for Wii?
|
At the start of the year, Matt C of IGN wrote a article about the lack of success that third-party titles (third-party M-Rated titles in particular) have on the Wii. Developers want to make mature games, but publishers apparently "don't have the balls to take a chance" and only want to stick with what has worked in the past ... quoteA quick examination of NPD sales shows clearly that many of Wii's top sellers are titles whose presentations steer as far away from the M rating as possible. Sure, Resident Evil 4 and even Umbrella Chronicles performed pretty damned good, but these titles are part of a series that is nearly as recognizable and popular as Zelda or Mario, for crying out loud. Metroid Prime 3, one of the best games on Wii, barely edged past 500,000 in sales (shameful!). Carnival Games is set to surpass that. Manhunt 2? I'm not even sure if Wii owners realized it shipped. (It's out, by the way.) Developers hoping to deliver an adult-themed game to Wii owners are facing a serious Catch 22 situation. Publishers are reluctant to touch it because there is nothing out there, (the anomaly that is Resident Evil aside), that unequivocally proves that Wii owners care about these types of games. And since few publishers are willing to take a chance on original M-rated Wii games, the proof needed to sustain more M-rated games on Wii may never arrive. It's no different outside of America. Look at Japan, where the solidly reviewed No More Heroes just shipped and flopped. Director Suda 51 recently made comments in which he admitted that he wasn't aware that the Wii demographic was largely uninterested in mature-style titles like this. He also said he would like to make a No More Heroes sequel, but if sales don't suddenly spike in America, I seriously doubt he'll ever get that chance. His next project could very well be on another system, where it is more likely to find success. I believe this is an issue that must be addressed by Nintendo itself because third-parties don't seem to have the balls to take a chance. The Big N, on the other hand, has all the necessary advantages. One, gamers like you are more likely to buy a Wii title published by Nintendo. You can deny it all you want, but you know it's true. Second, Nintendo has the resources to create a AAA adult-themed (and exclusive) Wii game -- or several of them, which would be preferable. source: IGN While the Wii has had some more mature/serious games before, alot of them haven't been well publicized or have been direct ports from other consoles... Many of them are also third-party titles so that hasn't helped their cause. (Nintendo is awfully lazy when it comes to helping out their third-party titles). But with Nintendo's direct backing, could Fatal Frame IV change all that? With Nintendo publishing FFIV, Tecmo is going to get some much-needed publicity for the Fatal Frame series. And in return, Tecmo will be giving Nintendo a much-needed 'mature' game to add to their collection. Could Fatal Frame IV be one of the first (or the first) game to start a "mature games" trend for the Wii? Could this game get rid of the "Wii is for kids" stereotype, and bring other mature titles into the spotlight? If this game is a success, then Nintendo will undoubtedly be more inclined to directly back other mature games for Wii, yes? What are your thoughts?

I guess it all depends of whether or not people enjoy Fatal Frame IV. If the game turns out to be a hit,we'll probably start seeing more games of this type appear on the Wii. The thing is though, this is the first time a Fatal Frame game has appeared on the Wii,and since it's a 'family' console, will people actually want to play Fatal Frame over, say,a popular series like Zelda or Mario?

It will probably be the first mature title for the wii, but then, the gamecube went through the same phase until Resident Evil 4 came out.
I don't know if Fatal Frame will be the game to put mature games on the wii, but it will help. Hopefully there are enough fans of Fatal Frame to promote the game.
(going off topic a bit...)Look at the Forbidden Siren series. The first one came to America and didn't do well, so they didn't release the second game here (Which pisses me off so much...cause I have a swap magic, the PAL version of the game...and a broken PS2) I like to believe this will never happen to Fatal Frame because of the fan base, but if the game flops for the wii...I know the first country Fatal Frame 5 won't be going to.....Stupid America.

To me,Resi 4 was more action driven; it ditched the trademark scares that made the series so popular (for me,anyway). My main worry is that Fatal Frame IV may stray away from it's roots,as Resi 4 did.

Hopefully it will. Whenever I think of a Wii a picture of Mario or some other Nintendo game with bright colors and all kinds of clouds and rainbows and whatnot pops into my head. Perhaps with games like Fatal Frame IV the "Wii game" stereotype could be brought down and the Wii be seen as a console for all kinds of different games as opposed to how many see it now.

It depends on your definition of "mature"
Twilight princess had fairly dark themes to it, and still maintained a decent level of family orientation.
Metroid Corruption also had some adult themes, albiet tame, in the game.
The wii has many games geared both ways. You have many family friendly games, but underneath the surface the wii has many games that contain some pretty intense senarios.
Fatal Frame 4 will of course be one of the most (if not THE most) hard hitting of these games, and unless nintendo manages its marketing well, it is going to be very underground.

it better.
The Wii is starting to get a reputation of being a kid's toy (at least where I'm from..). Needs more varieties, and I personally believe that's never a bad thing.

I hope that Fatal Frame effects the Wii in a positive way, getting it more mature and quality titles. Right now the Wii's library is pretty big but there are only a handful of games that are worth playing.

It'll take more than ZERO IV to stop the stereotypes of Wii being 'for casual gamers'. Mainly the culling of endless ad campaigns for absolute rubbish like Cooking Mama and WiiFit.
Besides, I've mentioned this before, but survival horrors on the Wii appeal to only the most nichest of audiences. It's happened before with a Nintendo console (hurrhurr, Eternal Darkness)
