Set in a Western house? (Not an Asian house?)

According to the info thread Fatal Frame IV is going to be set in an abandoned Western hotel. What do you all think of this?

It seems a little strange to set a Fatal Frame game in a Westernized location, considering the series relies heavily on Japanese folklore, culture and themes.
And alot of Fatal Frame's atmosphere comes from the unusual rooms and cramped, claustrophobic areas of a traditional Japanese house.

I also wonder how this haunted Western hotel will be connected to the haunted Japanese houses/villages from previous FF games?

re: Set in a Western house? (Not an Asian house?)

I wonder if they will perhaps be trying to mix the asian characters with the western settings. Though it seems a little odd with the houses in the other games being very traditional Japanese.
It would be a change, though i think the mystery and maze like quality as well as the decoration and appearance of the Asian houses really added to the atmosphere of the previous games

I wonder how they can relate the Western house with the woman in the kimono.

*making theories*

Hmmm...hard...I'll just probably wait and see.

I'm probably wrong; but what if the Western house is simply part of a prologue to the main game?
The house may not be the setting for the whole of the game.

Asian houses are scarier in my opinion. Something about the layout and way they're made is just more unnerving than western houses.

I think it's daring for them to take a different kind of route for this game. Let's see if it pays off .

Still need to get a hold of the previous games ...

re: Set in a Western house? (Not an Asian house?)

Maybe its still in Japan. Doing a little history lesson here, Japan started to westernize after the Meiji expansion. Maybe a rich Japanese family admired western culture so much, they made their mansion look more Western. Japanese people were also encouraged to marry westerners. So maybe the family was mixed race?

To me, the picture of the house from the outside still looks a little Asian-ish, the roof especially. But thats just me.

hmmm.. human smuggling?

I bet there's more to see than just the house.. I assume the game is longer than the previous ones so there should be more.

re: Set in a Western house? (Not an Asian house?)

if the game set in a Western House then i guess we'll have no hope of seeing Mio and Mayu back (since both of them stucked with The Lost Village already) how about expand to both Western and Japanese then create the link between the new n the old , west meets east eg: samurai meets gladiator lol (just example)

See, that's what I was thinking...sort of. Like, a westernized house in Japan. Since we know how much America loves to 'spread the joy' around the world, maybe some Japanese people made their house to resemble a western one? Just a thought....
And I don't think Mio and Mayu will be returning. lol. well...if anyone, I hope Mio would return or at least be mentioned.... I'm a little sick of little miss gimpy.

I like that Tecmo is changing the usual setting. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the Japanese style houses. But I'm happy to see they're expanding. It should prove amazing

You can say "bye-bye" to Claustrophobia.
I'm intrigued to see how they'll put this thing up, hope it's for the best.

BIG NO!!!

i won't agree!
the story still sticks up with japanese culture, urban legends, lifestyles and characters.
So it will be confusing for me if it set in a western house.

re: Set in a Western house? (Not an Asian house?)

Here's an interesting article I found ...

quote
Is Fatal Frame IV too Western?

With Fatal Frame IV being released in Japan today, fans are starting to notice changes between this game and previous ones in the series... namely the addition of a Western hotel, a Silent Hill-esque hospital, Resident Evil-style gameplay and the typical "badass tough guy" that is popular in many survival-horrors.

But are these changes for the better, or have they lost the themes that made the previous Fatal Frame games so unique?

Gaming Issues takes a look at the changes that are in Fatal Frame IV and whether they are an attempt to appeal to a more Western audiences.
