Chapter Four

I stood there in shock for a moment. This was not a situation one sees every day, so why would one think I automatically knew what to do? Exactly. I didn’t. With my jaw at my feet and fear blazing in my eyes, I had no clue what I was going to do. I had to save Dominic, but the only way I could do that was if I unfroze my entire body, which I don’t think was going to be happening anytime soon.

“Lacey! Do something, for god’s sake!” Dominic shouted from his corner, voice trembling. That sparked the Mightyena’s attention. It slowly turned its head towards me, and I could swear it actually smiled. Not one of those: “oh hey, I know you, long time no see” smiles. It was an evil smile that read: “interfere and you die too”. I stepped back through the doorway, subconsciously meaning to run, when a realization hit me. What the hell was I doing? I was going to let my best friend be killed by some rabid Mightyena? What was wrong with me?

I stepped back into the room, semi-reluctantly, and shouted, “Hey you!” The Mightyena looked in my direction. “Yeah, you. Big scary black dog who thinks he’s all that. Come and get me!” I turned and booked it out of the room and down the stairs. I stopped in the entrance hall, realizing it wasn’t following me. A few seconds later, I heard the crash of the paws against the floor, heading in my direction. Aw crap, it was actually coming after me. Stupid Lacey did not think this plan through. I ran out the door, down the path, past my house, past the Professor’s lab, past Kat’s house, and up into Route 1. Another bad decision on my part, because by the time I realized I didn’t know the area well, and there were wild pokemon out here, the Mightyena was too hot on my trail for me to be able to turn back. I came to the conclusion that I had three options. I could keep running, and get worn out, caught, and probably killed; I could give up, try to reason with the beast, and probably get killed; or I could turn around, fight, and maybe have a very slim chance of survival. Well, option three it is. I am not a fan of dying, let me tell you. I spun around quickly, grabbing both Oshawott’s and Solosis’s pokeballs off of my belt. This was going to be a really unfair fight experience-wise, but maybe two against one would give me the advantage. The Mightyena stopped dead in its tracks when it saw me turn around. I gave it a look that screamed “fight me”, and threw both pokeballs into the air.

“Oshawott!”

“Solosis!”

They both cried as they were released from the confinement of their balls, ready to fight whatever came at them. Well, okay that’s a lie. Oshawott saw the Mightyena and hid behind me. I sighed. This was going to be a lot harder than I thought. Mightyena snickered and started to walk towards me with that victorious look in its eyes. Then a miracle happened. Two figures came up behind Mightyena, pokeballs in hands.

“Hey Lacey, need some help?” Dominic smiled as he released his pokemon, Snivy, onto our little battle ground.

“Yeah, we saw you running and figured you could use a hand,” Katrina explained. She threw her pokeball in the air, revealing that her choice that morning had been a Tepig.

Upon seeing Tepig, Snivy, and Solosis ready to fight, Oshawott slowly slunk out from behind my legs. “Oshawott!” She shouted. She was ready to fight, too.

I looked dead into the Mightyena’s eyes and smirked, “You’re finished. Let’s go, guys!”

Chapter Five
I surveyed our little battlefield and the pokemon. Then I remembered that Mightyena is a dark type. There goes my plan of getting that two pokemon advantage. I quickly called Solosis back into his pokeball. I was about to call for Oshawott to use Water Gun, when movement behind Dominic momentarily distracted me.

“Dom, what’s that behind you?” I shouted. When he had come here with a smile on his face, I’d known something was up, but had disregarded it briefly. Ten minutes ago, he had been cowering in the corner of his room, terrified for his life. His house was practically destroyed, and his mother was dead. How on earth was he in such good spirits?

“Oh, it’s just Lilligant. This was my mom’s pokemon. I guess she’s mine now, huh?” He still had that goofy smile. What was going on?

Unfortunately for me, I took too long contemplating what was wrong with Dominic, and got hit in the stomach with a very powerful Dark Pulse from Mightyena. Oshawott immediately came to my rescue, launching a Water Gun right into Mightyena’s face. There was a loud cry as it shook its head, trying to see what was going on. Seeing an opening, Tepig and Snivy attacked with Vine Whip and Ember. Enraged, Mightyena threw another Dark Pulse, but this time it was aimed at the three pokemon attacking it. It knocked them all backwards. Tepig flew into Katrina and they both hit the ground hard, Snivy wound up in a bush, and Oshawott got thrown at the tree and slid to the grown, completely knocked out. I tried to move to go save my pokemon, but Mightyena stepped between us, glaring at me, threatening another attack. I could barely move to reach Oshawott’s pokeball, let alone withstand another Dark Pulse. Katrina and Tepig were both unconscious on the ground, Snivy was too weak to move out of the bush, and Dom was still standing there like a goof, Lilligant at his side. He barely realized how badly his pokemon was hurt.

“Dominic...” I croaked. It was too painful to talk loudly, and even that got me another glare and a bark from Mightyena, warning me to shut up.

There was a loud thump as Dominic’s body hit the ground. He had fainted on the spot.

“Dominic!” I yelled, ignoring the pain coursing through my body. I tried to move, but I didn’t have the strength. I earned another growl from Mightyena, which sounded a lot like a last warning. I let my head fall to the ground. There was no use trying to fight. Then I heard a voice I didn’t recognize.

“Well done, Mightyena, but I said I wanted the girl and her little boyfriend. Did it have to get so ugly? Now I have to clean this mess up so that nobody knows what happened,” the voice said. I tried to lift myself up and turn my head to see who was speaking, but failed at it miserably, falling back onto the ground. I groaned in pain, as the voice spoke again, “Mightyena, why is she still conscious?”

The last thing I felt was another Dark Pulse throwing me across the pathway of Route 1, and hitting the base of one of the trees. Then everything went black.

Chapter Six

When I woke up, every muscle in my body hurt and I had very limited mobility. I was sitting in a chair with a gag in my mouth, my feet tied to the legs, and my hands handcuffed both behind my back and to the chair. I rocked back and forth trying to move myself closer to... to what? The room I was in was empty. There was one barred window, and it was about twelve feet up. The sunlight through it was strong enough to make most of the room visible, but there was almost no way I’d be able to fit through it, let alone reach it. The chair I was tied to wasn’t even four feet tall. The rest of the room was just cement. I shook my head, trying to focus more on what’s happening than where I was. My pokeballs! I immediately looked down at my belt. Both of them were gone. I looked around, hoping I’d be able to spot them, but they were nowhere in sight, and the sun wasn’t bright enough to give me a clear view of every dark corner.

Thinking back on what happened on Route 1, I tried to piece together what was going on. Again, I failed. The memories were a huge blur. I could faintly see a door at the far end of the room, but it wasn’t enough to give me much hope. At this point, one would be feeling defeated or even upset enough to be crying and screaming. Me? I was just angry, and it was getting worse by the second. I was tied up in a room, I couldn’t find my pokeballs, and my best friend, who had apparently been taken as well, was nowhere to be seen. This anger was getting harder and harder to control. I’d never encountered it like this before, and now I was starting to worry, but the anger overcame that feeling quickly. It was spreading through every part of my body, devouring my mind, my heart, my soul, until there was nothing but pure rage. Shadows started to snake across the floor. The handcuffs clicked apart, and the rope around my feet unknotted. The gag in my mouth disintegrated, and out came an inhuman scream. All the shadows swirled around me as I was lifted into the air. It seemed I could not break through the cement, so I hovered about six feet off the ground in the fourteen feet high room. The door burst open and six men in protective uniforms came storming in, each holding a gun and a pokeball. My head turned to glare at them, and they all drew back. Cowards.

I could hear them whispering amongst themselves, saying things like: “Those red eyes”, “How do we get past the shadows?”, “They never told us we would have to face something like this”. They were all terrified. How perfect. I formed the shadows into a claw shape and struck. The effect was like dominos. They all fell into each other, stumbling over their own two feet. All six of them were out the door as fast as they had come in. Another inhuman scream escaped from my body. I landed back on the ground, swarmed with shadows. They extended six feet from me in every direction. Towards the door I walked, my footsteps not making a sound. There were shouts from staff around the building as I paraded through the maze of hallways, tossing aside anybody who stood in my way. This power... It sounded like what the Professor had described during the Incident, but why was I still conscious? I tried to take myself to go find Dom and my pokemon, but a mysterious force kept me walking towards the exit. Whatever it was, it wanted out of this place as soon as possible. The shadows pushed open the front doors and I walked off into the night, knowing nothing about where I was headed.
