Gaming as a sport

OK, for the second time I seen gaming championships on Eurosport. The first time it was a soccer game and the second it was a first person shooter (very similar to Soldier Front). The word sport is defined as an outdoor activity involving physical exertion - but games like pool are still considered as a sport, so why not gaming?

I see gaming as something that can be done competitively no problem, but classing it as a sport is pretty ridiculous. Same deal with pool and cards. They're competitive activities, but not sports.

I think Eurosport may have a better answer to that than most of us.

Maybe it's time to drop the subject?

I'd class gaming as a hobby.

It all depends what you class as a sport. I could see why somebody would class it as a sport.

Yes. If you're particularly fat, then you cannot be an athlete, I don't care what you say. To call a darts player an athlete is ridiculous.

I know plenty of people who are fat, they are also the best (Track, Football, and Basketball) players I know. Being fat has nothing to do with being able to play a sport or be an athlete.

Gaming is no sport in my eyes just a hobby.

I think the term "e-sport" works well. Video games obviously don't require the same physical contact as real sports but they can be just as competitive. I wouldn't dismiss competitive gaming as "just a hobby" though, save that for gardening. A $200,000 USD/year contract to play for a team is the difference between a "pass time" and an "e-sport".
