The Story of 2 Nobodies
|
The rain was pouring down from the heavens. The Solihull Moor squad were huddled around in a small circle, shivering in the cold. It was the first day of pre-season, and it was a particularly disgusting day in the middle of July. "This is ridiculous" moaned Dave Morrison, the teams most experienced player. In the past he had played in the Football League for Leyton Orient and Peterbrough, and played in the Champions League qualifying rounds for Bohemians, but he was now winding down his career with Solihull. "The gaffers 25 minutes late. If he's not here by 5, I'm off" Michael Dodworth looked down at his watch- it was 4:54. Training was supposed to start at half four, and it was the new managers first ever session. Not a good first impression. Normally one of the other coaches would have started the session, but assistant manager John Frain was still away on holiday, and our only other coach, Rob Elmes, was looking after one of his kids, who was sick. "He'll be here" said Michael, and seconds later, Bob Faulker's battered Ford pulled up next to the field. 62 years old, he had, incredibly, managed non-league side Moor Greem for 22 years, and over 1150 games, until he took over at Solihull at the end of last season. He climbed out of the car, wearing an anorak over his tracksuit. Another figure stepped out from the passenger seat, and followed Bob over towards the rest of the squad. "Where the hell have you been?" asked Dave Morrison. "Calm down" replied Bob. "I had to pick up our new signing after his car broke down" Everyone in the circle laughed, and looked over at him. He looked quite young- probably still in his teens. He was lightly build, and around 5'7ft. "His name is Luke Robson, and he's a centre forward" said Bob. "He used to be in the West Brom academy" "So are you some big time pro then, 'ey?" asked Lee Collins, one of the local players and currently the teams captain. "Na, I'm just an ordinary guy" blushed Luke. "Yeah, sure" grinned Lee. Now can we start this training session? I'm freezing my arse off here!"

Michael
After a quick lap of the pitch, we were down to the football, practising our passing in pairs. I headed straight over to the new boy, Luke Robson. He played in the same position as me, centre forward- and it was always good to check out the competition. "Hey, I'm Michael" I said, extending my hand to shake his. "Hi" replied Luke "I've heard about you" "Oh yeah, and what did you hear?" "Well, before I signed I did a bit of research about the club. Apparently you've been here 7 years" "That's right" I nodded. "Anyway, lets get down to business. This is a training session, not a social club" The kid seemed to be a decent passer, but nothing special- he was on a par with me, I thought. But then we were onto the practice match, when this lad really showed what he was made of. We were placed on the same team, which would give us a chance to test out a new partnership. Throughout the warm-up and the drills, he had seemed quite and timid- but during the match he was screaming for the ball no matter where he was- and our team were giving it to him. The first team he got it, he was out wide, up against our left back Richard Follet. He passed it to Andy Ducros and began a run, and Andy returned it to him. He made his way into the penalty area and drilled the ball across, and I stuck out a foot to divert it home. The next time, he performed 4 step overs and then sprinted past our captain and centre back Lee Collins, who slipped in the mud whilst scrambling after Luke. After that he was away and was one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He struck his shot viciously- our first choice 'keeper Danny Crane stood a chance. He kept this up for the rest of the match, and with just a few seconds to go, we were 8-1 up- Luke had 4, I had 3, and Oliver Hartill added the other. It was at this point he pulled off the most sublime piece of skill of them all. 20 yards from goal, he had 3 players around him and no-where to go. Lee, who had clearly been wound up by Luke's apparent lack of respect towards him due to his skill, flew in with his studs up, but Luke just pulled the ball back and avoided the challenge. He looked up, and, seeing the 'keeper slightly off his line, sent a ridiculous lob towards the goal. We all looked on in amazement as the ball soared into the back of the net- this kid had talent!

Luke
The rain continued to fall as I walked along the road. The walk was over a mile long, and I was alone. But then, a car pulled up, and the driver wound down the window. Suddenly I was face-to-face with Michael Dodworth, my strike partner during the training session. "Need a lift mate?" he asked. I hesitated, and then nodded. "If you don't mind" "Sure, no problem. Get in" I climbed into the passenger seat, rain water dripping off my wet clothes. "So, what's a guy with your talent doing all the way out here in Solihull?" asked Michael. "Well, I was released from the West Brom academy, and I got a new job down here. And I though, why not join the team why I'm here?" "What job you got?" "I'm a cop" "What a coincidence" grinned Michael "Me too" I feigned surprise- of course I knew what he was. I knew everything about this man. It was no coincidence we were working together- far from it. "So I guess we'll be working together for the force as well as for the team" I said. "I suppose we will. Maybe I'll be your boss" laughed Michael. "Oh God" I smirked. I looked out the window. "Hey, this is my place here" The car slowed to a halt. "So I guess I'll see you soon then" said Michael. Of course you will, I thought.
