Ipswich Town FC - Taking Them To The Promised Land: Surprise Loan Signing!
|
I have always loved Ipswich... With my dad and grandad being mad Town fans, and having grow up in Ipswich it was hard not to love the Town. I never made it into the game professionally, I wasn't good enough.. Sunday league was ok, but after a short term as manager of my Sunday League side I realised that coaching was for me. After working up a good reputation as a coach I was offered a job on Jim Magilton's backroom staff.
On May 17th 2008, Jim my boss resigned as Town boss. Not that I was told personally I found out on good ol'e Sky Sports news. After a talk with the wife, I decided to apply for the manager's job. I thought I may aswell, even though it was highly unlikely I would get the job...
Weeks went passed and the speculation was wild on who would take the job. Many top names were thrown around. Even Alan Shearer was mentioned at one point.
May 28th was the day that changed my life and it all started at 2am in the morning... The phone rang and I woke up to a jolt, rolling out of bed and banging my head in the process and took the phone. To my surprise chairman David Sheepshanks was on the end.
As you may now have guessed the next day I was unveiled as Ipswich Town's new manager. Review's were obviously a bit negative but it was helped by the fact that I knew alot of the Town and was a highly respected coach in Suffolk, but that was for Non-League sides on the other hand...
So this is the story of how I will try to take Ipswich Town Football Club to the promised land.
---
Well, the other day I had to reboot my computer losing obviously all my different games on FM08. But being the person I am I kept records of all the games and who played/scored etc. So I will be doing this diary using my records but obviously the one thing I won't be able to do is give screenshots but I will try to be as helpful as possible by posting up the teams etc...

Transfers In -
Gareth McAuley -
Town were badly in need of a central defender or two, due to the retirements of ex-skipper Jason DeVos and Fabian Wilnis. Jim Magilton had tried very hard to bring McAuley in January, but with Leiceser being relegated, Rocky Thirteen easily signed McAuley for £1.1 Million.
Pim Balkestein -
When Jim Magilton resigned this deal was almost virtually done anyway, so all Thirteen had to do was confirm the 175k signing of the 22 year old dutch Hereenveen defender.
Tomas Sorenson -
With Stephen Bywater returning to Derby and with Town not wanting to make the move permanent, Town were in need of a keeper to fight it out with Shane Supple for the number one jersey. With Tomas Sorenson out of contract with Aston Villa, Rocky persuaded Sorenson to make the switch to Town on a free transfer.
Ian Harte -
With Sito being released by Jim Magilton, Rocky would have to sign a left back. Left backs are hard to come by so when he was released by Sunderland, Rocky Thirteen was quick to move in for a move. But Watford and Burnley amongst some other clubs were interested and the deal took a long time before he finally joined Town on a free transfer.
Marcin Chmiest -
Town fans will hope that this venture abroad will pay off. Town were linked with many big name strikers so were obviously surprised when Town confirmed that they had signed Polish 28 year old striker Marcin Chmiest. He signed for 140k on a 3 year deal from Polish team Arka.
David Nugent -
Town finally landed there man after the deal seemed very unlikely after he rejected a move in January. But the deal came at a hefty price of 4million and if he doesn't prove his worth this could backfire on Rocky Thirteen. But, Nugent has already proved himself at this level and will be hoping to fire his way to the premiership.
Transfers Out -
Gavin Williams to Cardiff City (150k) Sito (Released) Dean Bowditch (Released) Gary Roberts to Accrington Stanley (100k) Danny Haynes to Wigan (3 Million)

Feedback, please?
decent signings, you may need to prove to me what Ian Harte can do, but its a good start! I'll be reading this one! Hope Nugent works out for you as well, i'm expecting top goalscorer from him

Pre-Season Friendlies
Brentford 1 Ipswich Town 3 McAuley, Clarke, Haynes
Chelmsford 0 Ipswich Town 2 Lee, Walters
Gillingham 0 Ipswich Town 2 Chmeist, Garvan
Ipswich Town 0 West Brom 0
Ipswich Town 1 Aston Villa 2 Nugent
Rocky Thirteen will come out of pre-season with mixed feelings. All though Town dominated and passed the ball superbly in the first three games, they failed to impress too much against West Brom and Aston Villa. No players really had a bad pre-season, but new striker Chmeist impressed in the three games he played and Garvan who signed a 3 year deal ending rumours of him moving on, impressed in the middle of the park as usual.

It's Rocky Thirteen here, we've just played our first three matches, Preston at home, Walshall at home in the league cup 1st round and Burnley away. In other news I'm happy to announce new signing Gareth McAuley as our skipper and David Norris as vice-captain. Both men have been captains at there former clubs and I hope they will do good jobs as captain and vice-captain.
Ipswich Town 3 Preston North End 1
Team: Sorenson, Wright, McAuley (C), Bruce, Harte, Walters, Garvan (Sumulikoski 72), Norris, Quinn, Chmeist (Lee 72), Nugent
Unused Subs: Supple, Balkestein, Peters
Man of The Match: Owen Garvan
An average game tbh. The game was fairly even and few chances were made up until the 44th minute when Jon Walters broke the deadlock to put us one up. A lovely solo run down the right and then cutting inside and banging it past Lonergan. We then scored right after the break to make it 2-0. David Nugent got his head to a perfect cross from Quinn. Preston then pulled one back on the 70th minute and this would really test our defence here. Preston had a few chances but we held firm until the 90th minute where David Norris skipped past there defence to bang one home to make it 3-1.
Ipswich Town 1 Walsall 0
Team: Supple, Casement, Balkestein, McAuley (C), Harte, Peters, Miller, Sumulikoski, Clarke, Counago, Chmeist (Lee 34)
Unused Subs: Sorenson, Bruce, Garvan, Norris
Town Man of The Match: Pablo Counago
The match was pretty much all us. But did the Walsall keeper have a good game. We would have won about 9-0 if it wasn't for their keeper. We started the match off slowly but on the 25th minute Billy broke through only to be denied by a wonderful save. Lee who had just come on for the injured Chmiest who recieved a dead leg after a collision with one of there players also hit the bar with a header and Counago hit the post with a fine curling shot. Supple didn't have much to do in front of our goal but he was forced to pull of a good stop on the 55th minute. But everything changed on the 68th minute. Miller broke through and looked to bang it in, inside the area only to be clipped and bought down inside the area. Tommy Miller then stepped up to take the penalty and placed it nicely passed the Walsall keeper. We then held on and made our way to the second round albeit just.
Burnley 1 Ipswich Town 2
Team: Sorenson, Wright, Bruce, McAuley(C), Harte, Walters, Garvan, Sumulikoski (Norris 55), Quinn, Counago, Nugent
Unused Subs: Supple, Balkestein, Miller, Lee
Town Man of The Match: Owen Garvan
Well the main positive thing to come out of this was that we can play badly and win. Our defence was sloppy today and this was evidenced on the ninth minute when Ade Akinbiyi recieved the ball from a stray pass from Bruce, and although he stormed to try and block the shot it flew past Sorenson and into the back of the net. Town managed equilize though when incoming substitute David Norris netted his second of the season slotting home a cross from Owen Garvan. Burnley then continued to hound us with pressure, but we managed to force a counter attack from a corner and Jon Walters lobbed the keeper to win us the game.
---
Marcin Chmeist should be fit for the next match (Wolves at Home).
Ian Harte picked up a slight knock to his ankle and will unfortunately miss the next match.
We have drawn Nottingham Forest in the second round of the league cup.
