RAGE PC tweak guide

Below are some tweaks to help improve RAGE on PC, as its 'Auto Balancer' isn't particularly intelligent at determining which settings are best for your rig. Note many tweaks are personally tested and verified, and some come from publisher Bethesda or developer id themselves. All tweaks are for single player only.

Drivers
Be sure you have the R285 beta drivers from NVIDIA or the 11.10 Version 2 Preview driver from AMD.

Options
As of October 8, a patch has enabled a select few graphics options for RAGE, two of which are detailed below.

VSync

The 'Smart' option supports 'swap tearing', if supported by your GPU. The idea here is to maintain 60fps with no tearing, but for situations where you drop below, tearing will occur instead of the standard temporary drop to 30. If your GPU doesn't support it, it defaults to 'Off'.

Texture Cache
If you have enough VRAM, set this to large to improve textures and texture popping.

Command variables

Add these by right-clicking RAGE in Steam and selecting Properties > Launch Options.

+set com_skipIntroVideo 1
Skips the introductory videos.

+cvaradd g_fov XX
XX represents how much field of view you'd like to add on top of the default 80 (e.g. 10). On a high resolution monitor, you're likely to find it rather narrow, so experiment. On 1680x1050 resolution, 10 seemed about right, but you may prefer higher. May affect framerate.



+vt_maxPPF XX
A substitute for the "GPU Transcode" option, if it's not available in your video options menu. Both options compensate for a GPU bottlenecked by the CPU. Those with a dual core machine or similar should use a value of 8; for something a little better, try 16. Other valid inputs include 8, 32, 64, 128.

+vt_cudaBudget XX
Switch this to 16.6 or higher if you're happy with your framerate and want better image quality. It may negatively affect framerate.

Config file tweaks

Implement these by navigating to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\rage\base and creating a text file named rageconfig.cfg. Open it with Notepad and enter whatever lines you desire, then save and exit. Below are a variety of config commands, though I haven't tested them and can't verify what most of them do:

Man i understand your anger... For a six-years-dev-game, i's really a pity and a shame to let people buy a non ready version !

But do not miss a real f***** good game when you just have to do 3 or 4 tweaks ! It will take you 5 minutes to follow these instructions and your game will be perfect, with full fps, full graphics settings and no pops ! I assure you, I just played allnight long !

Please try this : in Program files/.../rage/base, create a new text document and name it rageconfig.cfg...
Copy and paste these values (with your hardware, it will be fine ), then save and close the file :





Then go to Users/YOURNAME/Appdata/Local/ and verify there is this subdirectories id Software/rage... If not, create it. It's a 1 Go cache folder and the game will use it just after you create (you could verify after one launch : there will be files in it)...
But don't launch your game now... 1 minute again, and you will be happy !

After you just have to erase the file "rendererPerformanceLogs" wich is in the same folder that the "rageconfig" you just created and enjoy yourself ! I can assure you it works ! I played all night long and no problems !

Of course make sur you have installed the last nVidia drivers for rage (and the very last, cos' i don't know for nvidia, but for my ATI they upload in first some wrong drivers with old version of their opengl... not really smart. So there were no changes ! with new one, it works fine !)

PS : If you see some characters with wrong textures in the first town you enter, it will disapear with your return from your frist mission for the sheriff. For me it was the case.

I don't understand these action.. i tried to write these command on the rageconfig.cgf file but it doesn't works ! i wrote it like that : cvaradd g_fov 10

No results. I want to do the tweak we can see on your screenshot, which modify the position of the gunned hand, it seems... But i'm not sure to know what i have to do.

And how could i write these commands on the .cfg file? Just like that?

Cos i didn't use these commands (you can see it in my precedent post, where there is some "seta_r...." commands). At the end I do't know if my config file is really operationnal....

Nictoeen If you're using the launch options method, each command needs a + symbol in front of it. If you're using the config file, you don't.

Also, please don't double or triple post...edit your previous post from now on if nobody has replied since.

Do you think my setup will play this game after applying the tweaks and drivers?

Just an upgrade of these commands, for a better horizon view (don't know how to say "profondeur de champ" in english... ) and better textures, seems :

Enjoy ! And be sure your rageconfig file is known as a CFG file by Windows, and not as a Text file...(change the display type in your explorer in order to have the "type" colomn... easier ) !

If it's not, it won't work and there won't be changes !
So, copy the default.cfg file (for exemple), rename it as rageconfig and then open it with Text edit.
Erase all text and replace the commands.
And... : tada !

Salut Nicoteen, dis moi j'ai crée comme tu as dis C:\Users\name\AppData\Local\Software\rage mais il ne s'en sert pas du tout....comment faire ?

I know these are tweaks for ENHANCING, I wanna go the other way.
